Hi... they sell these at Big 5. At first I was thinking it was a 336, but they say they have it in 44 and 357, and of course 30-30.

the 38/357 model is similar, but has no checking with a straight stock I think thats the same for the 44

I don't think the gun in the picture is quite what they're selling, either way.

I believe they sell the 336A, which looks like the picture but has checkering. They also sell the 1894 series in .357, .44 and .45LC with a smooth hardwood stock, but these have straight grips.

They've probably been using that same picture for 20 years or something, regardless of what rifles they have for sale.:)

It's a 336, an older model. No checkering or safety. They did make a 336 chambered in 44 mag a while back.

It's a Marlin 336A. I just bought one. The picture doesn't show any checkering, but mine came checkered. I think I will take it out for the first time tomorrow.

the small or nadgun cals are their 1894, their big bores are called 1895's. but these are just names, as they are exactly like the 336's but with dif sized, internals, or thickness of receivers, etc.

they are exactly like the 336's

No they're not. They are all derived from the same original designs from the late 1880s, but today, the bolt design is different on the rifle caliber guns, and this has been true for a very long time. Only the pistol caliber guns and the .22 rimfires retained the original late-19th-century design pretty closely.

Different sized internals? Not true at all, except for a few that are obvious, due to different length and diameter of cases, etc.

A lot of parts fit all the Marlin centerfires.

The receivers of the 1894, 336 and 1895 are all different lengths, not thicknesses.

It was Winchester that used the 94 receiver for both handgun and rifle calibers. Marlin makes a true pistol caliber rifle, .30-30/.35 Rem rifle, and big bore rifle, all sized to fit the rounds they shoot. They make 4 different receivers, models 39, 1894, 336 and 1895. The 336 and 1895 are very similar in design, but different lengths.
