who makes a good one? to consider, 500 or less cheaper is better, preferably .45 ive always been a long gun person so im not to sure thanks

Taurus will have many models that have manual safeties, But you will start to find many guns are getting away from manual safeties and going to DAO as most feel its the best setup for ccw.
The 1911 platform as mentioned by Gen Geoff is an easy place to start and many companies are making entry 1911's at that price that are great guns and deals.

I think either the M&P or XD line has a .45 with a manual safety also.

I went threw this when i first got into ccw and i was aghast to find hardly any guns with manual safeties as thats how i grew up was with one. It took months to get used to carrying any gun without one. But as long as your competant and use a good holster like everyone should its really non issue. I still prefer 1911's so i still have a gun with a manual safety tho.

How about a decocker and DA first shot? If that suits then Sig makes a nice gun.

I've also shot a CZ97 and it was also a superb gun even if it is a little on the heavy side. Weight isn't a factor for myself since we can't carry up this way other than at the range.

Anyone also noticed that all the guns with manual safeties seem to be external hammer fired? Does anyone make a striker fired gun that uses a manual safety? The closest I've seen in the major market share guns is the Xd with the grip safety.

The Taurus 24/7 DS Pro is a striker fired pistol with a manual safety and decocker.

Lots of people avoid Taurus. My 24/7 is the only Taurus pistol I own but it's been completely reliable so far. It's not as fun to take to the range as my FNP-45 Tactical but it does what a concealed pistol should do.

Manual safeties were the norm on pistols prior to the mid 1970s or so, so just about any single action auto that originates from around that time or before is likely to have a manual safety. Double action decockers really weren't widely accepted by the American public until S&W introduced their first big box 9mm (mod 59) in 1970. S&W had introduced the single stack Model 39 in 1955, but only small number sold. Both were the result of Military requests. The 39 saw limited use with the Navy, but was declined by the Army. The 59 was also requested by the Navy but not adopted. in both cases S&W hope to defray development costs by offering the gun to the civilian market.

Off the top of my head, some manual safety autos, not all are 45.

1911, obviously
Browning HP-35
Early Berettas and Taurus auto
CZ-75, 85, 97 and all the clones thereof
Sig P210 & Sig P220 SAO
Various Star and Llama autos
Several H&K models
Tokarev

Now, the number falling into the sub $500 range is much smaller. Particularly if we are taking new in box.

Of the 45s, the EAA Witness classic 45 is easy to find for under $500 as well as a few 1911s. The rest are only at your price point used.

I own 8 handguns. Only 2 have manual safeties...Buckmark Camper & Taurus pt111 mil pro. Neither of these is my choice for a carry weapon. I much prefer my Glock 27. I'll take 3 internal safeties to 1 external safety any day.

Steoger cougar is a great gun with manual safety. That is what I was looking for when I bought mine. Under $400. And a great gun. Mine is a 9mm they have a 40 and have just come out with a 45.

Arcus 98DA(C if you want a shorter barrel) in 9mm. It is a DA/SA similar in design to the Browning Hi-Power, same take down and safety activation. A Bulgarian military/police design imported by Century Arms in Vermont. About $400 new.

Stoeger Cougar 8045 .45ACP for approx $450 or less. Has a manual decocker/safety. Excellent gun!
