ok after going on a spending spree on a couple evil rifles and shotgun, I'm looking to get one more before the elections and before gun prices increase anymore than they are now. I'll probably stick to another military semi-auto. Guns that I have now:

PTR-91
Arsenal 107 AK (7.62x39)
Benelli M2 tactical

so what other rifle to get? Probably budget would be $800 max so no Springfields M1A :banghead: I was thinking to score one of those Romanian AES-10, with the bipod and all, but am leary of the century builds, seems like you have to clean up after their mess and do a complete refinish job on the wood:cuss: i would rather buy a gun that doesn't need to be cleaned up and refinished. I like some of the Vector HK clones but don't want to spend $1300 for a V53.

any other recommendations? I'm not limited by any California-like laws or mag capacity limits, so 75 round drums are allowed:D

I think a couple people mis-read my post. I have a PTR and Arsenal AK already.....looking for another rifle to get as my last military semi-auto rifle before the elections and another round of price increases...

thanks.

Get AR Recievers.

I am assuming that you want to buy just in case.

Why not buy 2 or 3 AR lower recievers and then just hold onto them till after the election.

Even if we get Obama, under a worst case scenario, nothing can happen before Feb.

Obama has a terrible record on guns, but if he wants to get anything else done during his presidency, he will avoid the gun issue like the plague.

Right now even though the Dems control the House and Senate, gun issues are radioactive.

The AW bill in 1994 passed by 1 vote, things have changed alot since then.

1. Gun Owners are more connected via the internet.
2. More of us own Black rifles.
3. The SCOTUS ruled 2nd and individual right
4. The Dems and their supporters remember the 1994 elections.

DPMS LR something, in .308, unless you really want a .223.

I've been thinking about one in .243, for prairie dogs...

AR, Garand, M1 Carbine, or MAS 49/56
I have the 1st 3, the MAS will be the next semi-auto or C&R I get. I just really like them, and hear LOTS of good things about the quality/accuracy too. Ammo is the only drawback

DSA FAL...'tis a beast.First time I shot it,I was rockin' fist sized groups at 100 rds(20rds)

AK-74

I bought a Saiga .223 but will not convert it, I like it how it is. I have the Arsenal AK so why bother going through the hassle of converting it to another AK.

I was thinking about the FN-FAL but those DSA guns cost a lot:banghead: I'm not too keen on the AR platform, I wasn't a fan of it when I was in the military and don't really like the platform as a whole.

The only other one I'm looking at is the Romanian AES-10

another factor: what cartridge will be remain cheap and what will increase? 5.56/.223? 7.62x39? .308/7.62 Nato?

Like the others said, get an AR platform. All good assault weapons collections need at least one AR platform IMHO.

Maybe a VZ-58 from CZ? They look cool, and are not an AK derivative.

Total speculation, but of the three I think .223 will become cheapest, since so much is already made in the US at tolerable prices. .308 will always be pricey due to the amount of metal in a round. 7.62x39mm may stay fairly cheap, or may go way, way up if its import ever gets banned. Even if it continues to be imported forever, there's more metal in it than in .223, so it will probably be more expensive before too long on that basis anyway.

Greatly improved trigger.
Improved ergonomics and balance.
Higher capacity mags.

Those would be the real reasons to convert IMO. Cool Ak looks are just a bonus.

As far your original question I agree that an AR 15 would make a lot of sense given what you already own and the price range you are looking at.

I would go for something in 7.62x39. Reason being that if a SHTF situation ever comes up and you have to scrounge for ammo, most of our enemies shoot 7.62x39. Your PTR covers the .308/7.62x51, and instead of a POS AR platform, go with a Galil for the 5.56/.223.
