What optics and mount on your AR flat top?

I am sending the funds out for an Stag-15 Model 2 and am trying to figure out what kind of optics I want.

Under $500 and I would like it to be fast on targets under 25yds and still good enough for faily precise shooting at 100yds. Is there such an animal?

I have never used one but was thinking of a Weaver V3. 1X for fast shooting and 3X for more precision.
 
I am in the same predicament. I just bought a Stag Model 3. I am unsure if I want to go for a HOLOsight from Bushnell or a target type scope or just go with plain iron sights.

Let's see what the more experienced AR owners suggest
 
On my Colt 6920 I use a Trijicon TriPower in a Larue Cantilever mount with a Troy BUIS rear.

The Trijicon chevron is fast up close and still allows for some precision at distance.

Whatever optics you decide on the Larue mounts are first class.

I have a trijicon Reflex mounted on my Rock River flattop. It will hold a three inch group at 100m and five inches at 200m. Simple, effective, reliable. Your mileage may vary.
 
i really like my eo-tech. there are no mounts needed it will mount straight to the rifle form the box. also there is a 65moa circle for extreme close quarters engagements and out t 25 like you said, and the dot in the center is only 1 moa so it is really great for taking those extended range shots.

and what is a recomendation without a pic!

I dig my Tripower and I am using an ARMS mount. I'll probably buy the Larue mount down the road.
 
On my flat-top bull barrel ar15 I have a Wilson Combat one-piece mount and rings and a Shepherd one-shot zero scope....also have Mangonel flip up front and rear sights...works great...
 
I like the Aimpoint red dots for general use. Plenty fast close-up and useful well past 100 yards. If the rifle is probably going to be used more for hunting that defense, I am partial to the Sightron SII 1.5x-6x/42 or 2.5x-8x/42 scopes.
 
I picked up a Trijicon Reflex for $200 off this board and I've been quite pleased with it. The dot is tritium and requires no batteries and it gets brighter/dimmer depending on the amount of light that's available.

It is very simple, low maintenance, and priced right if that's what you're looking for.
 
I use the inexpensive Bushnell 1.5-4.5 on one of my .223's and on my .50 Beowulf. At 1.5 you can easily shoot fast with both eyes open, and at 4.5 it makes them both very accurate well past 100 yards. The optical quality isn't as good as a VX3, or Zeiss etc. but good enough for most things. I use mine hunting pigs at night and in low light, the 1.5 setting seems to do ok in those conditions.

I'd think the 1-3 Weaver would be at least as good.

So there's no issue with cowitnessing the EOTech with your FSB front sight? I have the FSB on my Stag - so saving $150+ on an extra mount would certainly tip things in favor of the EOTech over the Aimpoint.

I second the "nice rig" comment. Did you put it together yourself or did it come that way? Source??

I have an Aimpoint on a GG&G cantilever mount on my Armalite M15A4(C),

and on my M15A4(T), a Leupold 1.5x5 on an ARM's 35 QR throw lever. It also has a backup Aimpoint on an ARMS 22M68 ring.

I have an EO Tech on mine. It's very fast for close up work and doesn't require a perfect cheek weld. It's got a 1 MOA dot an no magnification so it's not going to be a tack-driver at 100 yards but I can get respectable groups. I think the aimpoint has a 4 moa dot so it would be even harder but both are good for close-up shooting quickly.

yes my eo-tech is co-witnessed with no problem.

the rig is a blackhawk commando chest rig that comes as you see it. it is simple but effective. anywhere that sells blackhawk gear will have it. i bought it used from a good friend but they last a while so my $40 will go quite far. it has 4 magazine pouches, they are capable of carrying 3 30rd ar mags each, or 2 30rd ak mags each, or 2 .308 mags ea, ie m1a, fal etc.
there is also two additional pouches one on either side of the ammo pouches and i use one for a md kit and the other for 12ga shells. i really like the fact also that it is a x type harness in the back i like it that way.

i used to have the recon chest rig and it was good but you had to buy the pouches you wanted and such, that is what i had on my first deployment. it was more flexible but i like the commando it does what i need it to and that is carry ammo and med equipment. nothing fancy just K.I.S.S. !

You got lucky! I just checked on line - that rig goes for $100!!

high speed gear is really great stuff but quite expensive for my blood, but if money wasn't an option that is the route i would go.

Same here, although I didn't get quite the same deal. I have original Aimpoint
which I still use, the Reflex with no batteries is awsome. Target acquisition is fast and it is accurate for not having crosshairs.
