I'm looking for a very powerful "flashlight". Something I could shine out a window and light up the backyard or focus to a powerful beam. When I say flashlight, it doesn't have to be small, but at least hand-held and portable and run on batteries. I wouldn't mind if it could also be plugged into a car cigarette lighter. Maybe rechargeable?

What are some good ones? It would be great if it was waterproof, too.

Thanks for any help,
Steve

Normally, any flashlight qestion asked, my answer is Surefire. And, Surefire has lights that would work great for what you need. However, they are very expensive for a light like you are talking about.
So, I recommend Wal-Mart. I have a handheld, battery powered, rechargable spotlight that I bought at Wal-Mart. It is very bright. It is labeled 2 million candle power. I don't use it a whole lot. Usually just to see where the dog is when I let him out at night. But, I charged it up to go deer hunting two years ago and have never charged it again. Granted, I use it for like five or ten seconds at a time, a couple times a week, but I am still impressed. It comes with a wall charger and a cigarette lighter cord. I have used similar lights to spotlight coyotes from several hundred yards. I think it might have cost $29, but it might have been $49. There is no way a human could look into this light; his brain wouldn't allow it.

Those rechargeable hand-held spotlights are VERY effective; I wouldn't even CONSIDER looking at one without sunglasses. I've seen them in various candlepowers; 1 million, 2 million, etc. They're available EVERYWHERE; Home Depot, Sears, Wal-mart, Lowes, etc. About $20-$40 though less on sale.......check around.

Best deal I've seen is a Coleman Powermate at Big Lots. 2,000,000 candlepower is 19.99 and 1,000,000 candlepower is 14.99. I believe both can charge off of car or wall outlet but I may be wrong. They are rechargeable though and they seemed like very nice lights. I think I'll get one when I'm not broke.

What's your price range? You described the Surefire Dominator, but I think they're like $350 or $400.

:D
I want one.
If I was still working a lot of overtime I would buy one.
A total waste of money for me, but they sound really cool.

You know, I never really thought about that. I do use a flashlight at work. Carry a Surefire G2 on my belt all the time and an Executive in my pocket with the LED head. And an LED key ring light attached to one of my belt loops. I guess I could justify it.

If you have a job where you use a gun, write off all your ammo, guns, lights, holsters, training, gunsmithing, etc.

I don't. Although I have thought about that.
I am a firefighter. I am planning on writing off the Gunsite Tactical Medic class and I feel certain that I can write off flashlights.

Please don't take this the wrong way. I am not trying to be a jerk. But, I can't envision an on-line forum that discusses flashlights. Is anybody here an active participant on that board ? What do you talk about ?

I am considered a flashlight geek at work because I carry two with me at all times and have who knows how many more. If someone needs a flashlight they immediately turn to me. I buy the Surefire magazines, have spent a lot of time on the Surefire website. I have drooled over a dealers sample case of everything Surefire has to offer. I have studied the Surefire catalog. But for some reason I can't see getting on a forum to discuss nothing but flashlights.

I'm not what you'd call "an active participant" over there, I just do alot of lurkin'/ readin'..

Yeah, I know, a board that deals with nothing but flashlights does sound kinda crazy. Still, it's not any stranger than a board (click on the link below) that talks about nothing but motor oil, gear oil, oil filters, oil changes and the like..

:uhoh:

:what:

I got my oil changed today.
I should get on there an post about it.
They drained the dirty oil, changed the filter, and filled her back up while I read the latest SWAT magazine.
Oh, and I paid by check.
Told them I would be back in 3000 miles.

Oh, I forgot, I asked them about vacuming out my truck. They said their vacume was broken. I said that it has been broken for a year. They shrugged.

I actually joined candlepowerforums but I joined soley to ask one question about one of my flashlights. Mission accomplished...haven't really been back since but I'll probably go back every now and then if I have a question.

I guess some of them could ask what a gun board talks about...whatever floats your boat...but to answer your question, they talk about flashlights...I joined that forum last year and learned of the incredible ARC AAA which I now carry on my keychain.......along with good info on LEDs in general...also found out about 20 keychain lights for 20 bucks which helped with my stocking stuffers at Christmas...I am also looking for a good 2 or 3 cell lithium combat light to replace my Scorpion and the folks there have been a wealth of info....heck, I already have a P7 loaded with 147 grain rangers in a delfatti IWB...not much more I need to learn from here...

Oh, and unlike gun forums, their threads rarely degenetate into a "my flashlight is better than your flashlight and if you don't carry it you are an idiot"

;)

My dad’s yaking on that sight all the time. He wonders how I can read about guns all the time, or handle another “greatest death metal band of all time†thread.

Candlepowerforums is a great place, I mostly lurk however. I guess I have a flashlight fetish.

444, I have to smile because I used to think the same as you, but I am in fact a member of CandlePower forums. My wife and buddies are certain I have strong "dork" tendencies (the metal detecting doesn't help, either), and maybe they're right. The point is, it's all fun stuff for me and there just isn't enough fun stuff these days, so I don't care what they think.

Two years ago, I thought Mag-Lights were about as good as it gets. Then I joined CandlePower, learned a heck of a lot, and bought a ton of cool flashlights (which make great presents, by the way).

One buddy in particular used to give me a lot of crap about being a flashlight dork. Last summer, we were on a fishing trip up in Voyegeurs National Park. At night, sitting on top of the houseboat enjoying a cold one, we heard a strange noise across the bay. He turned on his Mag-Light 3D and tried to see what was making the noise (lots of bears there). I pulled a little light out of my pocket and it blew away the Mag-Light. The look on his face was priceless. Then, a night or two later, we stayed out too late fishing and got lost in the dark. The ONLY reason we made it back to the houseboat was because I had a different little-but-bright flashlight in my tackle box. Since then, he hasn't given me any crap about flashlights.

I think it all comes down to what you find interesting or fun. Since you own some SureFires, you obviously understand what a good flashlight can do. Who knows, if you checked out the website you might actually like it. Then again, you may not be as big a dork as I am. : )

Well as I said, I wasn't trying to be negative. I honestly wanted to know what was going on there. Personally, I don't think I would get into it any more than I would get into a forum about oil. That by no means I hold it against anybody else. I have had conversations about oil, oil filters, oil additives, gear lubes, and greases. But I don't think I am serious enough about it to get on an on-line forum.
I own a lot of flashlights. I try to buy the best flashlights I can. I have no problem spending money on them and have no problem talking about them. I just didn't realize there was enough to talk about to generate that kind of venue.
I have actually been on that forum reading in the past. A couple years ago now. I couldn't get in to it, but that certainly doesn't make it bad.

candlepowerforums is awesome. my current girlfriend thought my love of flashlights was a little odd at first, and now she has a Surefire G2 on her nightstand, a Tigerlight in the car and an Arc AAA on her keychain.

I use the Q-beams at work and they are excellent lights. They do have one minor problem. They drain the battery quite rapidly, so multiple batteries are a must. And unless they have upgraded their batteries in the last few years, they also develop a "memory", which shortens their duration even more.

I tend to agree with Smoke. Unless your backyard is HUGE, why not install hard wired floodlights on the back of your house. I have motion sensor activated floodlights that totally illuminate my backyard.

Aside from not having to worry about batteries, the floodlights keep both of your hands free.
