As the title says I need a reloading book. I have a pretty old Hornady Handbook of Cartridge Reloading Third Edition. I need one that has 50 ae and covers 5.56 x 45 a bit more.

As a new reloader, I've been browsing a ton of books lately... IMO, I think if you were going to buy just one, it should be the Lyman. Second would be the Hornady.

The more the merrier...

Current editions of Lyman, Hornady, Speer, Sierra, and Berger will serve you well.

Powder data from Alliant, Hodgdon (IMR, WW, and Hodgdon), Western Powders and others. Much of this is available on line.

I would suggest the Hornady 9th edition since you mention the 5.56. The Hornady manual covers the 223 Remington, the 223 Remington for military rifles and the 5.56 NATO in pretty good detail. They don't leave much out.

As to the 50 AE? They only cover the 300 grain XTP loadings. Plenty of them but only the 300 grain bullet.

I got the Lyman 49th as my first reloading book. Still like it the best. Also have the lee and spee manuals.

As well as having info online, the powder companies sometimes also have a free booklet available in the stores where their products are sold that contain basic load data

Personally, I only use two sources. Since I use a lot of Hornady bullets I use the Hornady reloading manual. I also use Hodgdon's online Reloading Data Center.

Another place to check might be your local library if you only want info for a few calibers. I only needed info for two and used the copy machine. Couldn't justify buying the whole book for such a small scope of information.

Lyman 49 has the greatest variety of cast bullets and also the greatest number of different loads and powders. Beyond that get the manual for the bullets you will use most. For me that was speer. One manual Lyman hands down. Hodgdon annual is also great if you use their powders.

Ditto on the Lyman manual - I also have the Lee and Speer. I use the Lyman most, but I do look through all three - better to have more than one.
