I'm looking for a case (hard or soft depending on your guys suggestions) that I can store my rifle in as well as transport it in. Anything in particular I should look at? Do hard cases provide a significant amount of protection?

Rifle will be a Rem 700LTR with scope and bipod.

Hard case for airplanes----soft for everything else.

The hard cases are generally a PITA----cause they bang against walls when your hands are full---hard to make fit in the truck etc.........

I actually prefer the hard cases. I have several of the cheap, black plastic cases that I use to transport the guns to the range. I think they protect the guns better, especially the ones with scopes. If you were taking a bunch of guns on a hunting trip or something the soft cases do take up less space.

A good soft case is fine. A plastic hard case will work too. If you want to look ultra-cool and protect your weapon well then one of those aluminums might be good but as someone said it's easy to dent 'em. That and they normally cost about a 'hun'erd bucks. The soft and plastic cases cost anywhere from twenty to two hundred dollars(In the case of the Black-Hawk Uber-Tactical case thingy).

you must not store a rifle (or any other firearm for that matter) in one of these cases mentioned in this thread. it will quickly rust itself into a pile of garbage.

fwiw for transporting my guns to/from the range/field, i prefer soft cases. on some of my hunting trips, there is too much stuff in my truck (like two kids and a wife), so the gun goes into a hard plastic case and rides in the bed.

I feel a hard case is a must if you have a scope and are going to submit your rifle to the rigors of off-road travel to get to your hunting destination. Not all hard cases are made equal.

The best kind have a stiff fiberglass outer body, or a think relatively inflexible plastic outershell that can really absorb some abuse.

And too true, never store a gun in a case.. soft or hard.

I think the ultimate in hard cases are the Pelican brand, I bought one for my M-1A which is the only rifle I own that deserves a 300 buck case. Absolutely indestructable. For most use I think a run of the mill Dockosil case would be just fine though.

Gotta plug Starlight cases. Mil-spec, meet FAA requirements, tough as nails. Company periodically has seconds...cases that don't quite meet the standards of the first line (usually for cosmetic reasons) for dirt cheap.

Starlight Cases

If you'll be doing a lot of traveling with your rifle or it will be subjected to rough treatment, a hard case is the best idea. Otherwise, a soft case is fine.
Best choices are:
Hard - Pelican
Soft - Boyt
