What safety do I need?

I have a Taurus PT1911 that came factory with an ambi safety and I want to install Crimson Trace grips on it but the saftey is in the way. :banghead: Does any one know if I need any particular saftey or will just any one work? I have called Brownells and Midway but neither of them know what will and what will not work. I've tried to contact Taurus and couldnt get any one to get an awnser. Any help would be great.

Why not just modify the safety you have.

Grind inside clearance on the grip for the retainer, if the safety has one.

Grind outside clearance on the thumb lever if it hits the grip.

If the Taurus safety is anything like the ambi on my Colt, the RH lever itself will have to be modified to clear the laser diode on the CT grips. I ended up with a long lever on the LH side of the frame, a short one on the right - it looks a little funny to some people, but works fine for me.

Thanks guys that is a good idea. I can just trim off part of it with my dremel so it will still be an ambi, just a little smaller on one side.

So far, the only 1911's we have have LH safeties.

However, this looks like an excellent combination for ambi safeties, as the CT grip appears to provide some protection against the safety getting knocked off (for RH carry).

I'm going to remember this, if I wind up with a 1911 with an ambi safety.
