I've got a tickle for a Single Action Army or clone . . . almost. I'm not trying to go authentic in anything but looks and feel. In short, I'm looking for a SA with a transfer bar. Or, I guess, a little better explanation about the "extra notch" on the repros.

I've searched Colt, Uberti, EMF, STI, Cimarron, and USFA websites and mostly come up with "authentic reproduction". At least USFA specified that they were true repros even down to the faults.

I know that Ruger has transfer bars, but what other manufacturers incorporate them into their SA design or have as reliable a safety? I want a six shooter, not a five (and not a double action . . . got those). Please advise.

Thanks,

Uberti also makes their gun with a transfer bar. It's sold as the Beretta Stampede, and it's very nice.

Taurus Gaucho I think. Think they stopped making it, though.

Doesn't the Beretta Stampede also use a transfer bar? I'm not sure about that one.

I'd go with a Vaquero, though. Rugers are fantastic quality for the money. If you're going to go transfer bar lockwork anyway, then you're not really looking for authenticity, right? The Vaques are pretty close in dimensions, having been recently redesigned to take out the pork.

Thanks guys . . . or gals

I appreciate the info.

Any good things to say about the Beretta Stampede? . . . or Ruger Vaquero?

Beretta Stampedes have transfer bars. I own one. They're really nice guns. My next SA purchase will be a Beretta Stampede.

Yes they are really nice and have the transfer bar. I like the looks of it better than the Rugers. The best part about my Stampede is that it was a Christmas present from my girl!! :D

Stampede is made by Uberti and has excellent fit and finish. Available in charcoal blue, which is gorgeous. It's probably the closest thing to a nice SAA, with a transfer bar.

Ruger's guns aren't quite as pretty, but the blueing on a Ruger is SOLID and outlasts nearly every other blue from anything I've ever seen. The Ruger has Blackhawk internals, e.g. a coil spring. It's a modern gun in cowboy clothing. I like the polished stainless for a combination of fancy cowboy style and modern practicality.

If you haven't used a conventional SA before, go Ruger. They're made from considerably more durable steels than are the Italian guns. Not as pretty, but much better finished inside.

The Italian guns are prettier on the outside, but wear fast, especially without action work to clean up the burrs and other rough fitting. Under hard use, they'll essentially self destruct without an action job. But, they do still operate like a Colt, ie, halfcock to load, etc.

If someone offers you a Gaucho, run. If he offers it at a good price, run faster.

As always, looks like I came to the right place.

I went with the Beretta Stampede Deluxe 5.5" in 45 Colt. Gorgeous.

Don't want anyone to think I ignored Ruger. I have a Super Blackhawk and Redhawk . . . love them. But I've gotten good reports on the Beretta and it's just purdy.

Thanks again,
