I asked about the Ruger PC-9 in another thread because I just wanted to have something larger than my .22 rifle, scoped, to target shoot with. The advice to that thread talked me out of that rifle. So, I guess it's about time to remove the carry handle from my AR-15 and put a scope on. What rings would be the best, and would they lift the scope enough to keep the front post from being in the way?

I would still like to have something besides the .223, also... any thoughts? It's just target, not hunting.

Thanks, Mikey D...

For a flattop AR, you need either extra-high rings or a riser between the rings and the rifle. I've got a riser by Prairie River Arms on mine ($28 from Brownells) with Leupold medium QRW rings. The height is just right.

You'll need to pick a scope first, then configure your rings and mount to fit.

At higher magnifications, the front sight won't really interfere with your scope view, even if the scope is mounted low against the handguards. Low mag scopes might be more problematic.

Gotta pick a scope first, though.

I think the Armalite mount is the best available, I 've tried some others. The front ring is offset to the front so you can mount the scope farther forward than if you used conventional rings. They're at www.armalite.com .

I'm faced with the same problem as Steelharp. A set of Weavers (low) didn't clear the front sight. I just can't seem to identify the correct combination of riser/rings to mount my 4x32var (1" tube).

Any suggestions on MFR/model/part number?

And how does Picatinny, STANAG, and Weaver relate?
