What should done next to my 1911?

I prefer the minimalist approach as well. I prefer a standard grip safety, thumb safety and slide stop, and a wide spur hammer. As far as the sights go, I actually don't mind GI sights. I'm by no means opposed to "better" sights, but I think the originals work just fine. My EDC is a 1947 Commercial Colt Government Model, and the only mods I have done is change the MSH out for a flat and the trigger to a long (just fits my hand better that way.)

I wouldn't do anything else to that weapon at this point. Shoot the snot out of it and then decide what (if anything) needs to be done.

So in other words, you think he should have bought a different gun?

.....
I think the GI.45 is a thing of beauty and would have bought one already if the sights were not impossible for my lousy 53 year old eyes. But I'd have gone for the Parkerized - that's just me, I just don't believe in shiny guns.

Sounds like you think he should have bought a different one as well.

No, just stating my needs and preferences. He's entitled to like what he likes. I started down the gun-ownership road on the basis of self-defense/SHTF ideas, and while I've become an enthusiast (the guys I used to jokingly call "gun nuts" just shake their heads and laugh at me), I still think guns should be heard/felt more than seen. So I don't care to pay for shiny guns (though the beauty of the Beretta 92 Inox is undeniable.)

1911's are a very personal thing. We like to customize them to our own personal taste.
Short of going to a custom gunsmith, or starting with a GI / Mil Spec it is hard to get exactly what you want without going this route.

I am cheap. And I'm not really into tinkering. I could see getting the Mil-Spec and having a beavertail put in (if needed) and be done with it, if the trigger was decent.

I haven't had good luck with pegged sights on 1911's, they seem to want to separate themselves from the slide and fly through the air after a few 1000 rounds. :)

I'd definantly dovetail the slide and get some better sights. I have YET to blow off a dovetailed front sight...

With no disrespect to the OP, why do we ask other people how to spend our money? Buy what you want, shoot it, then make changes as you see fit. If you like the extended slide release then leave it on. If you like the orginal grips then leave them on.

No offense taken. :D

I'm not really asking for others to tell me what to do with my money... I just figure that by asking an open ended question, I might become aware of an idea that I would not have thought of, or considered, previously.

If this was your gun, what would you add or change?

I'd pay someone to improve the grip safety fit, install different sights, dump the extended slide stop, and get an action job done.

I think people ask what they should do to their guns to get ideas of what to do. Nothing that says he has to take our suggestions. :p

Anyway, I'd change the grips first then the sights. I'm planning on getting a MilsPec which has already has the dovetails cut and a lowered and flared ejection port. I plan on doing the combat hammer and beavertail like you've done as well. I also plan on doing a trigger job, maybe getting a more custom looking trigger itself. I've also heard that getting a new bushing really helps with accuracy.

Good luck with your project.

I say go for sights next, that's a nice looking gun you have there. Just needs some good sights now... maybe you can splurge and get some good night sights. If I had the bucks that is what I would do... plan on doing that next to my Mil Spec... when I get the money, that is.

I'd ditch the extended slide stop. Install an extended thumb safety (single-side only, not ambi). Install better sights (Heinie or 10-8). That beavertail safety looks like there is a huge gap between the frame and the beavertail. I'd get that fixed pronto. I also prefer flat mainspring housings. And I'd install a lighter trigger (e.g., a Videcki look-alike).

As for the marks, yes they are from when the gun was brand new, about 3 years ago. I wouldnt intentionally mark up a gun, but over time I've grown fond of them. I think they show character.

Ahhh yes.... "Character Marks" sounds soooooo much better than what we used to call them! :D

Definitely more High Road.
