I clicked the .38 choice thinking of a S&W 442/642. Something good for CCW and simple for wife to understand. No switches, bells or whistles to manipulate.

Or a nice .22 like a CZ bolt action. 10/22's are cheap and good for blowing through a lot of ammo but generally need a bit of money and effort to get accurate enough to be interesting.

I think you should get a rifle next. I bought 7 handguns before finally deciding to buy mine (a FAL) and now wish I had done it earlier. Rifle shooting is so much fun. Especially an AK with relatively cheap ammo would be a good choice.

I gotta say get a Marlin model 60, Ruger MKII, or Buckmark. All will last a lifetime. Cant beat a .22lr for fun. You will also probably get bit by the bug and buy more than one.

I chose .357 mag revolver. I almost chose the .38 special, until i saw someone else mentioned that they chose the .357 because it can shoot both calibers, and i thought "oh yeah, thats en even better choice, almost didn't see that one".

Anyhow, here is my reasoning for the revolver: You say it is a wedding present from your wife. I am thinking long term. Although an AK would be cool, what if in the future you had to move to one of the states that allowed handguns, but not "assault weapons". I know there is a few handgun unfriendly states too, but only a couple that outright ban them. I guess im just thinking a nice stainless revolver would make a nice gift and heirloom. I dont know, i guess im just weird. :p

For the price you cite the best bet is a featherlite .357 of some kind. One of those titanium jobs. IF you had mor emoney I would consider an AK. But, this piece she'd be able to carry.

Ok... I'm one of the 3 who voted for the Hi-Point 995 Carbine. :D

The Hi-Point Carbine the cheapest firearm I own, and its also one of the most FUN to shoot. I've owned it for several years now and have several thousand rounds through it without one malfunction. In fact, its the only firearm my wife and daughter like to shoot when they go with me.

you don't have a log gun so i would say go for the ak, they are alot of fun to own and shoot. secondly i would suggest a shotgun like a remington 870 either one would be a great choice.

I would say AK, but I don't see you getting one for <$500.

what about the yugo underfolders, posted for like $450 or so before shipping and FFL stuff?

I've only found a few places that are pretty decent...
atlantic arms i think.
aim surplus.

I don't have the links with me now, but those were some that struck me as potential.

this is a tough decision....maybe for her gift i'll buy her something else from my list  hahaha

i voted for the 9mm carbine
but you should get a beretta instead of a hi point
i only payed 495 for mine so look for a deal on one of those cause they are fuuuuuuuun to shoot

if you are wanting a decent pistol I must suggest a Rock Island Armory 1911.

Friend has two and I must say they are nice, reliable pistols. And they won't break the bank for sure. :)

However, a rifle...you could get a Ruger 10/22 and a nice scope and have fun all day with that thing. go to a gunshow and get a few aftermarket 25 or 50 round mags and have a blast, so to speak....and the wife would like it as well, I think.

D

All good choices (.22, .357, .38, AK), except the High Point Carbine. Waste of cash. Get the Beretta CX4 Storm instead. Go for quality and good value whenever possible.

One point I will say. In your marriage manage your money to get the best value. Saving for a couple extra months or avoiding things that aren't good investments (Starbucks, fast food, etc.) will help you guys build a nice portfolio.

Congrats on your wedding.

Consider a shotgun to protect your daughter from the rascally boys that will come around in 14 years.

Ruger Mark III

I voted on the .22 auto loader, specifically the Ruger Mark III. This is one of the finest .22 pistols made (under $500) and just plain ol' fun to shoot. A real tack driver and .22 ammo is still relatively inexpensive. A brick or bulk pack lasts all afternoon....just my .02

That Ruger MkIII is a dandy idea, especially if you want something the wife and kid(s) can learn with while having a hoot yourself with it. If I was to go on the 'other' category, the Marlin 1894 in .357 or 44 is a really solid rifle.

I'm thinking I'm going to get a Saiga 7.62x39 (about $250 before shipping and FFL fees), convert it to AK later as funds come around, and shoot it in the meantime.

I'll also probably get a load of ammo, and maybe pick up a .22 pistol for the wife ;)

then we have the best of both worlds, long gun and a plinker. and a potential AK.

I'm tempted to also try to get something else around the same time, but i think that's all the budget will allow for now.

Thanks for all of the input, and i'll keep checking on this if anyone has anything to add!
