In the same price range, which would you choose? Please also state why. If you choose other, what and why? This would be used strictly for plinking and target practice.

I put this in General because other could be anything, not necessarily a rifle or carbine.

The hi-point review is kind of a shooting review.
Pick whatever you think fits your needs and budget the best. I think the kel-tec is better because it is lighter than the hi-point and is better made. You can also mount optics on it easier than a hi-point. Magazine capacities up to 33 rounds with the glock magazine version versus 10 in the hi-point.
 
Humm choice between 2 9mm carbines. Do you care about mag capacity, interchangeability, and being easy to find. Do you care if it folds up? If you do go for the keltec.

All of the hi-points are +P rated, not sure about the Kel Tec.

Looks like you can get rails for the Kel Tec, the HiPoint already has them built in.

If the Hi-Point took glock mags i'd already own one but it doesn't :banghead:
 
I've fired the Kel Tec. It was barely adequate. The sights were not very good and group sizes were large. It was generally uncomfortable shoot and the felt recoil was excessive for a pistol cartridge. The trigger was marginal. It would keep you alive in a pinch, but you stated this is a range only gun. Buy something nice and you'll be far happier. Look at the Beretta CX series, for instance.

Save up and buy something better. "Buy cheap, buy twice" definitely applies to the gun world.

BTW, the Ruger 10/22 is an exceptionally fun gun perfect for the uses you specified. It costs less than the two carbines listed. The basic birch stock gun runs $199 at Impact Guns, so you should be able to find it for even less if you look around. Premium 22 LR ammo runs $7 per 100 and you can get 550 rounds of Remington Golden Bullets for $18.

The Kel Tec has better magwell options so you can swap with your pistol (if you can find the one you want-good luck), and folds up, which can be nice, but takes away the option of using an optic if you intend to fold it up. The Hi-point is limited to 10rd factory mags, there are 15rd aftermarket mags from Pro-mag, but they have a lot of mixed reviews. The Hi-Point has a better trigger, and a more substantial feel to it. They also have some of the best customer service in the industry. From my personal experience I would choose the 995, not to say the KT wouldn't suit you just fine also.

I already have Marlin M60, Marlin 981T, and Henry H001 so I have enough .22 rifles for me.


I know these are not premium firearms, I just want something fun at the range. I like the Kel Tec but am worried about the triggers. It would be nice to share mags with my M9 as well.

Nice thorough reviews. Doesn't help a lot with the decision because he really liked both, but I'm leaning toward the Kel Tec. The low weight and being able to use my Beretta mags would be great for a little fun carbine.
 
I have the Hi-Point 995 and love it. I originally purchased it from a pawn shop years ago with a broken front sight. Hi-Point sent me a replacement front sight as soon as I sent them an email with a pic of the broken sight. No questions asked. I even told them it was a pawn shop purchase. Didn't matter to them. Shoots great groupings plus cheap to shoot.

I've done the low end range gun thing. You won't be satisfied with the performance.
 
And I can't tell you how many times I've heard stuff exactly like this.
Secondhand buyers getting whole new rifles, ect.

I have shot one of the older pre rail Hi Points and it now has a warm place in my heart and a spot on the short list. It was simple but well thought-out. A humble firearm that hits above its price point, although since the rails they have gotten alittle more expensive. When I shot them they were around $200 =(

Besides, with customer service like that I think they ought to be rewarded somehow =)

I answered "other", and you asked for justification, so here goes:
At the same price point, I must give a +1 to the 10/22 off-the-wallyworld shelf and a full-on aftermarket fancy-up job. It'll extend your range fun out to 100+yds vs. a 9mm scattergun that will cost an exponent to shoot. At further than down the hall range, these trinkets are scatterguns. At further than down the hall I can cast a lot more .38cal lead in a millisecond with a single load of buckshot. As a range fun gun, they just don't make sense for me. If they do for you, the answer is simple: whichever one you want.
