I am new to pistols in general. I had a berretta in the military, that I hated. I have small hands and it just felt way to big. I made a trade with a good Kuwaiti Colonel and got a whole case of Browning High Powers, and that was the best feeling and shooting 9mm (in my limited experience). But since the government wouldn't let us bring anything back, I had to bury them in the desert, except for 4 that I gave to CBS news guys.

Anyway, the hp's seem to be a little out of my price range. What would be a dependable, target/ possible carry 9mm. I fired a Glock 19 the other day, but didn't care for the trigger.

Thanks,
Jim

thats such bull???? that they wont let you bring anything back...

but in anycase when buying a 9mm you need to ask yourself the following in no particular order:

1. Price Range
2. Safety Level (manual safety, grip, trigger, drop, etc)
3. Capacity
4. Availability of Holster and Aftermarket Products (sights, mags, etc)
5. Feeling in the hand, ergonomics (it has to fit right)
6. Repuation
7. Extra Benefits (warranty, hi caps, etc.)

post your answers to those and we'll be able to help out more. right now you're just gonna get people posting and telling u their favorite pistols which really dont help your situation at all.

Nope, in 91 only civy's could bring back weapons.

Prioritys:
1 price
2 dependablity
3 feeling (small hands, narrow seems better)
4 capacity, but not a real issue
5 warranty, but would buy used if I can find someone to check it out

I don't really know the differences of safeties or reasons to have a specific type. Also what is the difference between DA and SA, and why would it matter which type.

Thanks,
Jim

Hello, sir. I am not sure if it will help, but if you want an FN Hi Power I believe they can still be had for around $500 through CDNN. I do not have their phone number but it can be found on their site at www.cdnninvestments.com . They don't advertise firearms on-line so you would have to call. Several have purchased these NIB pistols and seem happy with their purchases.

Best and good luck.

Well, alot of great guns come to mind.....what is the guns intended purpose?
Target/Range, Competition, Defense, Home, CCW, ??????????? CZ's, BHP's, , Sigs, Glocks etc....There are alot of world class guns out there....more info would be of benefit.
Off the top.......Kahrs for the thinness. CZ and HP for ergonomics and capacity.
Sigs for the same things as CZ...a little more money.
Glocks..you can run them over with your jeep and they dont change......:what:
Shoot well........

I just got a BHP with 2 17 round mags, 3 15 round mags and a 10 rounder for right at 500 from CDNN. Add in $20 for a transger and you have a pretty good deal. Something to look into.

Best bet would be to find a friendly dealer/store in your area and ask to fondle...err, hold...several pistols to get a feel for what fits your hands the best.

Even better...try to find a range that rents the pistols you're interested in and shoot each one.

For carry, probably want an alloy frame or light-weight steel, not stainless frame. For home-D, a rail for a night-light/laser is the way to go.

May I suggest the following? They are all reliable, dependable, outstanding shooters and well-respected among the top shooters in USPSA/IPSC as well as IDPA.

CZ-P01 (replacement for the beloved CZ 75BD)
Sig P229
Sig P228
Sig P239
Sig P226, P226R, (a bit on the large side, but check it out...never know).

Other contenders:
Springfield XD (out-Glocks the Glock for me)
IMI/MRI Baby Eagle - this one is highly rated by many as having one of the best ergos around

Good luck!

If you want a Hi-Power on a budget, get an FEG Hi-Power.

Its a Hungarian copy of the Browning that can be had for much less then an FN or Browning (they also make a .45 version).

Sig has their refurbished guns which are a great value. I believe they go around $500 or so for a refurbed Sig, not exactly sure. The slide is also refinished and the internals are checked for function.

I looked over a refurbed P220 (.45 ACP) and I almost plopped down the money for one.

9's I have known...

I have owned and fired three nines. The first was a Lt Wgt Colt Commander with a low serial number. Great pistol, ok trigger, bad sights. The second was an HPIII. Better pistol, great shooter, nice trigger, great sights, favorite with sneaky pete's long ago and 100% classic. The third was a Glock 19. A tough little son of a gun with strange feeling trigger, super nite sights, light carry and the confidence found in tributes from many gun guru's. Take the classic and keep shooting.

CDNN has matte finish Belgian made FN Hi-Powers for $429.99. They also have SIG P225's in very good to excellent cond. for $369.99, add $20 for "hand select" ones. Either way you can't go wrong, both are great pistols that fit small handed shooters well.

Thanks for all the info.

It will be primarily for target and eventually carry(or I might have a CCW before).

The range I have been going to has some weapons to rent, but its about 99% Glocks. I liked everthing about the 19 except the trigger. I could get used to that, but it messed me up when I went back and shot my buck master. I had better patterns with the Glock than buck master, when 2 days before I put 50 rounds through a fist size pattern (well most of the 50)

Thanks,
Jim

A company in Abilene, TX called CDNN sells FN Hi-Powers for around 400-450 dollars. That is about what you'd pay for a decent 9mm. Worth a look if you like the HP. I love the HP...its the only 9mm I will own.

That said, the Springfield XD-9 has a nice grip and is a quality piece. I have one in 40SW and love it. Also, you might want to look at the CZ-75..these are good pistols and can be had for under 400 bucks.

I agree about the 92 Beretta...too chunky for a 9mm. Ditto for most hi-cap 9s. The XD-9, C-75 and Hi-Power have the best grips in the double stack 9 category.

My experience with 9's is limited to three-CZ75B, BHP, and Beretta 92FS. All three are great pistols. The Beretta is just too big, and I recently traded it for a Springer Milspec. Last weekend, I took the BHP and the CZ to the range. Shot a group with one, then the other. As good as the CZ is (and it's very good), the BHP still felt better and pointed more naturally. I would be very hard pressed to make a choice between the two, though. The CZ has functioned flawlessly since day one, never a problem. I bought the BHP used and the previous owner had mucked around with the springs, causing some ftf. Replaced all the springs with OEM and now it works perfectly. It has high adjustable sights that I don't like.

Both are all steel pistols, which cannot be said for the 92FS and certainly not Glocks or XD's. It's really a subjective choice, what do you like the best?

If like Hi Powers, this guy over on glocktalk has been trying to sell his FEG Hi Power cheap. He claims it's brand new. I've been pretty tempted, but just can't justify buying another firearm right now.

I wish someone would buy this pistol, though, because it's like putting a piece of cake in front of me. I know I shouldn't...I really shouldn't...but if someone doesn't show up and eat the damned thing...

Nathanael_Greene, thanks for the link. I will ask the wife when she gets home to buy that, I just bought a buckmark last week. Can't buy another for 30 days in VA.

Thanks,
Jim

I have a small hand as well (cadet medium), and have found several guns that fit me perfectly:

Beretta Cougar "L" model (much smaller grip than a 92FS)
Sig 239 (perfect for carry)
Walther P 99 (interchangeable backstraps, small fits great)
Springfield XD-9/XD-9 compact (just fits a smaller hand well
Colt 1911 seems to fit even a smaller hand well.

Of the above, if I could only have one, it would be the Sig.

Went to the store today to check out some things. They didn't have any CZ's, but checked the Ruger, Steyer, Sigs, S&W, and a couple others. The BHP and S&W SW99felt best, but they wanted $500 each for a well used BHP and a new S&W.

I guess I will have to call CDNN and see what they got. Anyone in the Richmond VA area with a CZ? Seems no one I've talked to here has any, but I haven't been everywhere here yet.

On another note, the buckmark shot great today. Used a competition target (don't know what kind). It had 5 different targets that you shoot 5 rounds at each. And I scored 414, but the sights were a little low. Will see how it does tomorrow. Besides the guy at the range quite charging range fees since I have been in there 5 days since buying the weapon last Saturday. Anyone in the South Richmond area, check out Straight Shooters in Colonial Heights-great owners and very helpful and enjoyable experience.
