What sights should i use on my Mossberg 500

I prefer a bead or no bead. The bead is a reference, not a site. I point with a properly fitted shotgun.

Now, shooting slugs is more like shooting a rifle, at least at extended ranges, and on rifles, I prefer a ghost ring aperture. I wouldn't even use the sight in the house, though, if the gun fits me properly, just point shoot like I do with my bird guns or even handguns at very short ranges. But, since you're all tacticool and already screwed up the stocks, get an electronic sight, but don't forget the batteries. :D I HATE electronic stuff on weapons unless maybe it's a rangefinder or a night sight, myself, since I hate complication. Hell, I miss breaker points on motorcycles. laughing-smiley-001.gif

Another vote for ghost rings. That's what mine wears.

Or a quality RDS, something that can withstand the punishment of 12 gauge recoil a few thousand times without dropping zero is not going to be cheap, though.

Just ain't my cuppa tea. If it floats your boat, go for it. See, I'm a Fudd. I hunt and have been a bird hunter for over 50 years. Here's my 500....

Only mod I made to it was to shim the stock for proper fit. I've been hunting the salt marshes down here for 20 years with this gun. Very tough platform however you dress it up.

It seems to work for me, but some people don't like the knoxx specops stock cause of the so called cheek slap

THAT is improper fit and it's probably in need of more drop at comb, not pull length. The gun should come to the eye without haven't to bring the eye to the gun. You should NOT have to crawl the stock to get a good look down the barrel. Now, if you put some rifle sights on it, though, that will raise your cheek weld and COULD, perhaps cure the problem, or not, depends on how badly the stock fits you. Mine was so bad I'd come home looking like I went 3 rounds with Joe Fraiser...well, except that I was still alive. Blood would be pouring from the gash on my cheak in the marsh. Wasn't pretty, then I shimmed it for more drop and, well, it's very nice and mannerly now and it kills more ducks because it's faster to my shoulder. In a home defense scenario, faster to the shoulder and on target could mean you survive and he doesn't.

Also, strictly home defense, I'd use the bead, learn to point the gun with a proper fitting stock like a trap or wing shooter, will speed you on target. Rifle sights, especially in dim light and at short ranges, are a hindrance more than a help to ME. I'm intimately familiar with my shotguns and don't need sights in the way. Sights are great if you're deer hunting to 150 yards with a slug gun, but at short range, I can put every round of slugs into a paper plate off hand at 50 yards and am much faster doing it than with sights.

JMHO...

Cipher81,

Welcome to THR and rest assured that we don't all make comments like this

But, since you're all tacticool and already screwed up the stocks, get an electronic sight, but don't forget the batteries.

Some people don't know how to have a differing opinion without making it a personal insult.

Hello MaterDei, Thanks for welcoming the new guy Lol... I've read alot of information on here and i don't really take offense. At the end of the day we are all guys who are into guns for different reasons. Whether it's hunting, competition or law enforcement & military and we are gonna see things different on several occasions.

Well, I've given my two cents. I do think one should stick with simple on a home defense gun, not get carried away with stocks and sights and such and I'm not the only one here that has that attitude. Short barrel YES, but good fit is important, spec ops stuff or not, that's really just window dressing. What works in the field for me works at home.

Sorry if I step on your feelings. I hope you investigate FIT a bit more at least. You can shim ANY stock on a 500. Mossberg offers shim kits, though I just cut up plastic bottles to shim mine per advice from this very board. It is a helpful place and Dave will be missed with all his wisdom. I THINK he's the one that coached me through the fit thing. Good fellow and a knowledgeable shotgunner needless to say.

+1

Adding gizmos and doodads is no replacement for training and practice. If this is for HD, then lose the sling - it will only cause you to meet Mr. Murphy at the the most inappropriate time. At most, you might add a way to hold a few extra rounds, and MAYBE a small light - the more crap you add, the more you change any semblance of balance

Adding another stock without knowing how it needs to be fit properly is, IMO, a waste of time and money. Very few, especially here, have any idea how to fit a stock and think that adding some collapsible stock to change LOP is the way to go. y the tie you add hundreds of dollars of gadgets, you have changed the weight. balance point, fit and feel

Your gun should fit YOU, not you fitting yourself to a gun
