I want to get a Boyt GS75 gun case for a shotgun which is 46" long from butt to muzzle. What is the proper length case to buy? Do a get a 46" case or should I get a 48" case. Thanks for your help.

By the way, if you don't like the Boyt GS75, feel free to talk me out of it.

Well, I never pondered it too much?

But if your gun measures 46", and the gun case says it fits 46" guns, that would be the one to get.

A 48" will have 2" extra inches left over to bend double and flop around.

And when it comes to gun cases at least?
Size is everything.

Thanks for the reply rcmodel, and you are correct, of course, but unfortunately Boyt doesn't say that the case fits a shotgun of length 46" - Boyt just lists several lengths in which the case is available: 46", 48", 50", and 52", but it doesn't say whether those are outside dimensions of the case or inside dimensions or whatever. So I really don't quite know what they mean - that's why I need some "inside information" from someone who has owned Boyt cases.

Gun case dimensions are / have to be listed by what length gun they fit.
With about an inch to spare so the zipper will zip.

I have never seen them advertised or measured any other way in 50+ years.

If you don't believe me?

Call them and ask them yourself.
It's a toll-free call.

Don't believe I'll call. 50+ years experience can't be wrong. Thanks for such a courteously delivered response.

Cases last a long time, so unless this is the only shotgun you're ever going to own, I'd buy a case that will fit a bunch of guns. For instance, a Rem 870 with a 28" barrel is 48.5" long.

My favorite case these days is an old Avery duck gun camo case with a shoulder strap. It will float with a shotgun in it, but it's the shoulder strap that's spoiled me.

I nearly always go a size up from the length I technically should need for a given long gun, and I've never been sorry I did.

BTW, Cabela's house brand Boyt look-alike cases are very good for roughly half the cash.
