Have my Tumbler ( which is a 'Tumbler' and not a Vibratory ) about ready to go finally...got some plain fine Walnut Shell Media.

What is it you guys recommend for adding to the Media?

It was some Car Wax or very fine Polishing Compound?

I use Flitz media additive.
Funny thing--it comes in a polishing compound bottle & a Media Additive bottle--
same product....................

Damn you get clean shiny brass in 20 minutes? That is fast.

About an hour. Just walnut takes about 4 hours in my tumbler.

The nice thing about Flitz is that is leaves a little residue on the case. When all's done you can shine the case to a great finish with a dry cloth.

You'll find that dry walnut media works great for cleaning brass, but really fine corncob media with the NuFinish in it will really polish them up nice and shiny. Big difference between cleaning and polishing. Clean is OK to load as-is, but I like 'em shiny too.

I'll be headin' to Pep Boys tomorrow...

Clean and Shiney sounds good..!

Thanks!

I use Flitz with good results.

I am recommending adding it to your media for a 10 minute spin before dropping in the brass. If I pour it in on top of the brass & media I find cases with a bunch of media and Flitz stuck inside them. If I missed one of those and charged it with powder + a projectile and then crimped later fired it off? Might be bad?

Nu-Finish, Turtle Wax Liquid, or basically any liquid car polish/wax. The thing with auto polishes they deposit a very light film of wax or poly finish that stopes tarnish. Been tumbling brass for 2o years, ask me how I know. I also recommend ground corn cob in a 20/40 grit for a higher polish and the big benifit you get is no media caught in the primer pockets or flash holes.

This works in either a rolling tumbler or viberator.

Hope this helps.

Half walnut/half corn cob with Nu finish every three loads and Mineral spirits every load and toss in a used dryer sheet cut in 4 pcs.

Let me ask this also -

I am seeing quite a few Cases fired with BP years ago, which are pretty grungy...light Verdirgis patches and so on. Slight, I do not think this has done any harm...these are .45 Long Colt and .38 Special Cases.

What is good for preliminary cleaning of these, prior to running them through the Tumbler?

Just Boil in Soap and Water for a while then dry? Or..?

I use walnut and Nu-finish for all cleaning, including the grungy. Guess I am lazy, but it works.

Some will say that my view gets the media dirty. That is what I buy it for: cleaning.

When my brass is really dirty or tarnished I pre-treat it with IOSSO liquid case cleaner. It also cuts the time considerably. Then tumble as normal. Love that shine.:D

I always have a bottle of Nu-Finish on the shelf because it is also great for removing road tar, etc. while cleaning/polishing the car finish at the same time.

Has anyone tried other car polish other than Nu-Finish? If you have, do they work as well?

When my current supply of Dillon/Midway brass polishes runs out, I am planning to use Nu-Finish, but I am curious.

I use Turtle Wax liquid and Mineral Spirits in walnut. Brass looks like new after an hour. Turtle Wax was half the price of the Nu-Finish where I am as well.

Well, last night I dug out all the old uncleaned Brass I had from the 1980s, and got it all sorted and organized for cleaning. Have some newer once-shot Brass also which is really next to new, but will Tumble anyway in batches according to how clean/grungy it is.

I must have two thousand cases for .38 Auto...a thousand for .45 Auto...a thousand .38 Special...and 500 plus of .45 Long Colt.

Wow, it'll sure be nice to have these all clean, and ready for Reloading trials.

Unpacked my general reloading stuff and got the Press and Powder Chargers and Luber-Sizer set up nicely, and find the other stuff is only 2/3rds there, my second Press is missing in action, so, back to Storage and more rooting through Boxes..!

Tumbler should be rolling in a few hours...gotta head out to PepBoys in a little while.

918v,

DO you mean you use 'Comet' in the Media?

Most any liquid auto car polish/wax will work well. You can even use auto rubbimg compound, just won't have any finish to prevent tarnish after tumbling. One bit of advice, only use a teaspoon or two, using to much will end up coating the media way to much.

Corncob media

Polish from Midway, Berry, or Dillon works great. Haven't tried any others. I tried walnut, but it doesn't work any better than corncob, although it's a bit faster on really tarnished old range brass.

Corncob and Midway polish.
