Well im going to get my first rifle for christmas. I was planning on using it for deer/bore/any other medium-large game animals. Im looking at about a $4-- price range for the gun/scope. Also I want it to be bolt action. If anyone could suggest or post links to anything that meets those criteria please do so.

Thanks in advance! :)

Are you used to shooting a centerfire rifle? This makes a difference in selection. If not, I'd start with a .243, 6mm Rem., .257 Roberts, 7mm-08 for starters. The less recoil, the better. A .270 or .30-06 doesn't really kick that much more, but when you're starting out, the boom and the bucking rifle can make you flinch, even if it doesn't actually hurt.

As for the rifle, don't overlook a good, used bolt action Remington 700, Winchester model 70, Ruger 77, etc. Four to five hundred bucks should be plenty for something nice, if you look in the right places.

that is actually a very good choice, with most wsm's, they don't really give to much improvement over the parent cartridge, but the 270 wsm, makes nice gains over the 270. just curious, do you want a wsm rifle, or did you not know what this cartridge name means?

To be honest i do not know what the cartridge name means. If someone could explain it would be greatly appreciated.

Don't run before you walk. Many people shun the humble 22lr, yet it has been used to teach the fundementals for many many years. Honestly, I would forego the center fire rifle for the time being. Find yourself a nice .22 rifle and get lots of range time in with it. Learn to shoot it with iron sights, then once comfortable I would put a scope on it. A bulk pack of 500-550 22lr bullets will set you back under $10. There isnt much more fun than blowing through a brick of 22 in an afternoon. Spend time at the range, build your skills and trigger technique, talk to others, do some reading, ask questions and keep shooting. The person holding the rifle is much more important than the actual action or calibre. Once you are comfortable with the 22, then take the skills that you have learned and transition them into the centerfile rifle.

As for hunting, have you been through the hunter safety course? I know you said you wanted to hunt medium sized game, but what distance are you shooting? A used marlin 30-30 can be had used rather inexpensively and would handle everything that you said you wanted to do.

The 270WSM stands for Winchester Short Mag. It is a realatively new round that is shorter than the standard 270. There are less manufactures and less choices for ammunition than the standard round, but it has a very slight advantage in performance.
