Looking at two different options. Cost is within $40 of each other so that is not a problem. Ruger SP 101 in 9mm or a Walther PPK .380. What are some pros/cons of both. Probably carry strong side IWB or ankle depending on situation and weather.

Being a revolver fan from way back I would go with the 101 and never look back. I just bought a new 101 in 3 inch to carry. Before I was carrying a S&W 36 in 38 special.
I think the 101 in 9mm would make an excellent carry weapon with some Speer gold dot or some of that powerball ammo.

Between those two I would go with the Ruger. The PPK is a good weapon but I have had problems feeding anything but ball in the two I have owned; of course many folks advocate using ball in a 380 to ensure proper penetration.

Why worry about it, no issues with the Ruger.

Unless you already have other guns, including revolvers, and you practice a lot, I would go with the ruger. It's definitely a good carry gun. And the 9mm round will do quite well. If it's only for carry; you have other guns for home defense; and you practice quite often; then there's also nothing wrong with the Walther PPK. It's the perfect carry weapon. Fits in the front pocket, IWB holster, inside jacket, etc... And with the right ammo, it is as dependable and reliable as anything on the market. But as a semi-auto, you need to be real comfortable with it. On the streets when you carry, you need to be able to clear the problem without even thinking about it. That means a lot of practice. Revolvers generally don't have that issue. Basically, pull the trigger and it works. No safeties, slides, magazine, extraction, ejection, etc... to worry about. But with practice, the Walther is also a great choice. 380 is quite good for self defense. You don't need large calibers or 15 rounds for carry purposes. I personally don't like the mouse guns because I like a gun that fits in my hand with all fingers wrapped around the grips. I love the walther.

Forget about the 9mm and the .380. Instead, stay with the SP101 platform but make it the 3.06" .357 mag. Just my two cents.

No comparison. SP 101. I would recommend .38/.357 if you go with the Ruger. You will HATE the Walther.

Agree that between the 2 choices...SP101. There may be other alternatives but thats not the question.

The ruger is a bit heavier and bulky but still great to carry in the right holster. I have not had success with pocket carry...just to heavy for me...I also agree that the 38/357 would be a better choice.

Where did you find it? Fantasy land?

Just like the .38 spl and 125 grn .357 ONLY; I think Ruger made a 9mm for a year or two. seems like I had a catalog that listed them. I threw all the old catalogs away about a year ago.

Thanks for all the feedback. Sounds like the ruger is the way to go. Reliability being number one consideration I was leaning that way already and now that is what I will be adding to my collection.

Thanks

You have a SP101 in 9mm?

I didn't mean to be sarcastic, I just wanted to warn you that finding a 9mm SP101 will be timely, and costly. So go with the .357, and "getter done!"
