I just got my first Norinco 1911 and was planning to use it as a defnese or carry gun. What can you guys suggest as regards to modifying it or making it a better pistol? Thanks very much for all your inputs.

There is a Norinco thread going on right now. Go join in and you'll learn a lot. Ask "Tuner." When it comes to 'rinco's he's the man.

Before doing anything to it, take it out and put a couple hundred rounds through it to see what it does or does not need.

Shoot it.

Load it.

Repeat.

Good mags and good ammo are a requirement. Replacement springs are a good start. Maybe having a local smith check the extractor. If the trigger isn't what you expect, a basic trigger job/clean up/polish job.

I made mine into a MEU(SOC) replica. Chinese SOCOM---that ought to be illegal...

I like Wilson mags just fine but I prefer McCormick Power Mags. The Power Mag bodies with Metalform rounded followers and the stronger Wolff springs (once the McCormicks wear out) are the absolute best mags I've ever used.

I haven't put a lot of rounds through my Norinco...but it seems to like just about any mag or ammo I put in it...which was a pleasant surprise. And I prefer a flat mainspring housing...so I did switch that out.

Thanks Dave Sample. Thanks to everybody's inputs. This Norinco pistol is a bit ugly but whenever I make a "feel" of the parts, it seems to be really very hard. It gives me a kind of retro feel on the look of older 1911's.

I like the way the Norinco's that I worked on just fine. I also like the WWI look of the first 1911's that came out. It is a great copy of that first series of 1911's. It is not the very first, but rather when Colt switched to the arched mainspring housing and the short trigger. I am thinking of using some of the China parts in a pieces/parts/junk gun I may build using an 1990 Caspian Lower end with a 1914 Colt Tope End. They are just taking up space and if they are as good as Tuner says, why not put them in that kind of a gun. Might be a fun project!

I have one I put over 8500 rounds through with no failures of any kind and it still has the original springs and parts (except that I replaced the plastic MSH the previous owner installed). Magazines are Norinco factory or WWII GI. I have a second I have put around 2000 rounds through,
also with zero failures and no parts replaced.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Next question?

Jim
