I was charging and seating a batch of 200 rounds last night and I had my first bad case. It wasn't crushed but looked odd enough to toss it aside. I pulled the bullet and removed the powder, but I wasn't sure what to do with the primed case.

[Q:] What's the best thing to do with a primed case that needs to be disposed of?

Thanks

I throw them in the trash can. Probably one of the most stable, least flammable things in there (except for coffee grounds).

Run it back through your resizing/decapping die and re-evaluate the case and re-use the primer...Wear safety glasses. In hundreds of cases I have deprimed of live primers I have never had one go off. I even tried by really ramming one. No POP...

Ditto on decapping live primers, if the case is boogerd up too bad use a universal deapping die . Primers are built as to go off if the anvil is struck and it is on the other side of the primer away from the decapping pin . I too have had to remove a few live primers but as others have said wear eye protection and keep your free hand clear of the press .
Check your homeowners insurance before you start .:what: 10 spot .

Thanks, all. I wasn't sure I could use the de-capping die without the primer going "frrt!". The campfire idea sounds good, as no one would expect the old guy!

PS: The first thing I did after setting up my reloading closet was to get a fire extinguisher.

Camp fire is a Genuinely bad idea!

A spent primer blowing out of a case has enough velocity to shoot your eye out for quite a ways!

Cook-off tests I have done indicate spent primer's and .22 RF cases will almost penetrate a section of 18ga furnace duct sheet metal.

As for one popping in a loading press?
IMO: Very safe, in the unlikely event one does go off!

The open mouth of the case is contained inside the steel die.

The spent primer would be slowed inside the ram & press frame.

All you will get out of there is, at worst, a pop & a little puff of smoke.
