My late brother in law and longtime friend passed away and I have taken one of his massive bull elk racks, 6x6, full skull from my father in law. I hope it inspires me next fall. :)

I would like to mount it on something and make a small plack to inscribe his name etc.

Anyone have any good ideas or pictures I can look at of your European mounts to get some ideas? I was thinking of a large timber round, or an old piece of barn wood or something similar.

thanks

Sorry for your loss. Old friends...esp hunting pards.. are sorely missed.

Weathered barn boards, driftwood, timber, beaver chewed stumps, scraped saplings (scraped, rubbed, with antlers), rusty barbed wire.

sorry, no pics...but I/we have used these materials for some whitetail "Texas" mounts.

thanks for the link and ideas. I just had another idea... a piece of granite or slate. I will have to do some more searching to see how that would look.

Never thought of that....Granite would look nice. You probably could find a shop that has some drops/cutouts for a sink or some smaller pieces that they would might finish cheap. Otherwise granite is generally pretty expensive unless you get a good deal.

Another option to the granite would be a granite looking laminate (like corain) it would be easier to work with and much lighter and less fragile.

"...a piece of granite..." Not exactly easy to drill with a hand drill. Masonry, it ain't. Neither is slate. Both would require some serious bolts etc. to hang on a wall.
You can get slabs of walnut or other hardwood in most lumber yards. Mind you, walnut won't be cheap.
A slice of tree with the bark on or not, would be a good idea. It'd have to sit for a year or so to dry though. Then sand one side smooth. Likely be able to get it for free too. Can't imagine anybody cutting down a big tree refusing to give you a slice for the asking. Even the pros.

A good friend of mine has a lazer engraving machine from heck. He can scan a old picture or even something off of a memory card, cd, whatever. Anyway he can laser engrave a image of your buddy with the elk if you have one. This thing will engrave slate, granite, marble, wood, whateever. I had him make me a couple plaques and they look real nice. I am sure there is someone in your local that could do a similar item.

I had a couple mounts like this link. With a pewter plate made to mount underneath with a pict of the hunt. http://www.skullcleaning.com/record_services.php?id=2
