It's about that time to set up the deer feeder again. Rather than only using deer corn this season, I would like to use something other than just corn.

I know corn is empty calories for deer, so what other corn sized deer feed is available on the market?

What do some of you other hunters use?

As pointed out in the link, it takes a while for deer to become interested in a new item on the menu. You might try a mix of corn and their patented goodie; or a mix of corn and deer pellets.

"Empty calories"?

Empty Calories?

Corn had always been described to me as "candy" for deer and not really good or bad for them. All carbs - no protien. Atkins diet no-no.

Kinda like the Miller Lite after a dove hunt - candy!

Walmart sells something labeled "Deer Corn" up this way. It's about $4.00 a 50 lb bag. I don't know how it differs from other corn, but lots of folks feed it to deer.

Purina makes a product called Purina Deer Chow, which consists of basically corn and protein pellets, similar to the protein stuff the big wildlife ranches feed. You can mix it yourself for a lot less than Purina charges :).

Just my .02,

Just where have you found a deer on a DIET? :scrutiny:

[monster buck voice] Can't eat out of THAT feeder. Too many carbs. Honey, do these antlers make me look fat?... [monster buck voice]

If you want, you could try the deer corn mentioned or try a molasses drip. Deer love anything sweet... :D

If your worried about protien and stuff, just buy horse feed. The cheap sweet feed mixes are generally around 12% protein, with cracked corn mollasses and pellets of other stuff mixed in. I can get it for 4.95 per 50lb bag at sams club, go through 500lbs a week with the horses. When I put 900 lbs f it on a cart and start through the store at least one person asks how many dogs I have, guess they can't read  . You can step all the way up to 16% protein pretty easily by buying racehorse feed. Beyond that you'll need to buy bag of calf manna to mix in with it in small amounts. Or switch to feed thats ground for hogs or steers.
