Nope using cross sticks That rifle weighs about 16 pounds just a bit too much to hold and shoot accurately at that distance

I really don't appreciate you guys saying things like "it couldn't happen" and "it's just a movie". Tom Selleck is one cool mofo, he can do anything. His list of skills extends well beyond shooting buckets at 600+ yards. Next thing you know you guys will be saying Chuck Norris is not the baddest SOB on the planet.
All kidding aside, it was a great movie. And while the conditions were less than optimal for the shot(unknown range, offhand, snapshot), they at least somewhat set the premise up that he was the best. So its not like it was some rancher with a 30-30, this guy had a specialized rifle and basically shot for a living. Not that it could be done, but if it could be, they at least made it believable that this would be the guy capable of it.

Anyone know the average speed of a galloping horse of that type?

Looks like a fast horse, so let's say 30 mph at full gallop, but averaging in the startup and slowdown periods, let's say it's averaging 28 miles/hour.

28 mph = 0.00777777 miles/ second.

The horse ran for 49 seconds in the clip. That means it ran (49 * .0077777)= 0.38 miles. There are 1,760 yards in a mile, so the shot distance is approx. 671 yards. If the horse was averaging 30 mph, then it ran 719 yards.

So is a snapshot on bucket-sized target doable at 700-800 yards by an extremely highly skilled person? Possibly - not likely, but possibly.

Not sure what type horse it was, and IIRC, the horse was running rather than galloping. 30mph is a good ballpark for standard breeds, thoroughbreds push 40 with a lil jockey doing all things right.

The best jokey & the fastest horse in the world would have only gotten out to about 900 yards in 49 seconds.

Yep, let's say a thoroughbred can average 37-40 mph in a distance race - even best case scenario, let' say averaging 39 mph, that's right about 934 yards.

Horses carrying a jokey typically only average 12 mph in my understanding - they're laughing too hard to run at a full gallop. :p
