This is a follow up to my last thread. I am planning on getting a 22-250 and am researching which rifle I want. I see there are basically 1:14 twists rates as the norm and 1:12 from a few companies. Obviously I could shoot a little bit heavier bullets with the 1:12, but does accuracy suffer? Is the gun made for lightweight 55 gr and less bullets? Should i go for the 1:14 or 1:12?

Thanks

my ruger #1 Varminter only likes 55 grain Winchester factory loads, dont know about hand loads, I hear the 1:9 will do the 64 grains well....wish I could load up heavier for hogs but I guess will have to settle for thru the ear shots...I kknow it shoots that good at 100 yards..

1:9 is the way to go it can handle 69 gr even up to 73 grains

But also remember that a faster twist can make some of the lighter varmint bullets fly apart when they leave the barrel.

The 22-250's stock in trade has always been high velocity & flat trajectory with light varmint bullets.
It went head to head with the 220 Swift when the Swifts factory load was a 46 grain bullet, thus the slow standard twist.

Even now, the fastest & flattest shooting varmint bullet will be the 50 or 55 grain load, which the 1/14 handles perfectly.

It will handle up to 63 grain semi-pointed bullets.

If you want to shoot heavier bullets, get a .243 or 25-06.

With a 22-250 63 grain, you can get about 3,500 FPS in the 22-250.
A .243 will shoot the same weight bullet 3,700.
A 25-06 will push an 87 grain at 3,500+.

If you get a 1/9, then the very light & fast varmint bullets will often blow up in mid air.

EDIT: gun guy PM'd me to say the orginial 220 Swift load used a 48 grain bullet, not a 46 as I incorrectly stated. I had a Senior Moment.

Thanks. Seems the consesus is that the gun is made for light bullets thus the 1:14 twist rate. If I want to shoot heavier I should buy a different gun. I think it makes sense for what I want. Makes sense. Thanks guys
