I dont have any kids (at least not that I know of). I did pick up a used ruger 10-22 for my (then) eleven year old sister when she started showing some interest in shooting. However, at age 12, she appears to have lost interest.
Cricket .22 single shot bolt. Nice gun but trigger was WAY too hard for little fingers.
Next was a Ruger 10-22. Cut the stock down and swapped out the trigger for an adjustable model. Painted the stock bright pink w/ black tiger stripes.
Can you tell I've got a baby girl that loves Barbie and other pink things?
My daughter was about -6 months when I bought her a Remington 514 and a 50's vintage Red Ryder. She's 11 months now and now has a 28ga 870 with 2 stocks and 4 barrels. She'll get a NEF single shot rifle this fall and maybe a handgun in a couple years.
I remember fondly that first baby shower for our lovely daughter; she was a month old and the ladies started arriving before noon....Mrs. Pierson bought our daughter pink window shades, and Mrs. Smith arrived with a beautiful lace bonnet... all the other ladies followed suit with nice feminine gifts for the baby... after all the gifts were opened there remained only one; a longish box in the corner. Mrs. Templeton gushed and said she wold open the dear gift. The box was opened and there... to the utter amazement of all the ladies at the shower... was the one gift that humbled all theirs, that made all theirs tremble, that made their sacrifice small; the ultimate daughter's treasure: A mint stainless steel Ithaca Mag 10 Roadblocker sawed-off, ten-gauge shotgun, with custom folding walnut stock and gold trigger. Oh Praise Jeebus indeed the chorus arose from the ladies; our daughter, the daughter, was truly blessed for all lifetime!
We haven't bought our daughter a gun yet. (She is only 9 months old) But hopefully it will be soon. When we do buy her one, I think we are going to get her a Ruger 10/22 anniversary edition rifle. (To start with)
I just hope she enjoys it.
