Out of my holdings it would be a Ruger 10/22, scoped and bull barreled.

In my back pocket would be the model 66 4" .357mag pistol.;)

You stick with only one, I got 2!:neener:

BUT the magnum would be first choice. flashy noisy moving hollow point!

be safe.

Lever action owned by Billy the Kid or Jesse James, so I could sell it and buy a bunch of handguns in different calibers.

The One Gun Man is quite likely unable to afford or make room for more than that, being impoverished in the city where guns are essentially illegal; I say a Saturday Night Special subcompact pistol in a <9mm chambering.

I'm making an assumption that the OP's post implies a solo and perhaps undesirable foray in unknown and unimproved territory. So you're along, need to move by foot and don't wish to hang around for very long. As such, weight (or rather, less weight) is a goal and also makes the analysis more challenging. So...
Continuing to assume the 'bear country' scenario, I'd carry my S&W .44Mag V-comp (4" barrel + compensator). As ArchAngelCD noted, you could load with .44Mags for those most dangerous times, and .44Specials for the general case, and suppose you could carry some .44 shot round. But that last one would presume you're in 'snake country' wherever the heck that is. And a Diamond D chest rig for carry.
In that regard, I have a question for the folks posting that they'd carry a .357Mag in bear country. Is that because it's the gun you own? Or is it a better choice (again, presuming bear country) than a .44Mag? And if so, why?
Regardless of whether it's a .357Mag or a .44Mag, it does leave you with one very large round that is less than useful if you're trying to take a smaller animal. The result being that you won't get eaten, but you may starve.
You could OTOH go a bit more radical tactical in which case I'd carry an FN SCAR 17 heavy. It's about the lightest semi-auto 7.62/.308 out there. Probably a lot lighter than an HK91 (or equivalent) or even a shotgun with three barrels. And the round has both range and lots of kinetic energy for unwanted and giant 4-legged creatures that find you objectionable. A SCAR 17 (well really the round it fires) gives you more range and significant power as well as flexibility in field of use. It's the only long gun that I'd consider (though I'm still thinking about a 12-gauge that can be broken down to smaller pieces - but one barrel only) but it's really mission creep. At the point you are carrying something like this, you probably ended up where you are to use it in anger.
Finally (and this post is suffering from mission creep as well) if you ended up in a place empty of big scary 4-legged things, then I'd drop back to a regular 9mm-45cal semi-auto sidearm. It's likely the one you know best.
