i have a blue service six, it had just a few minor little specks of rust on the cylinder here and there which i've got smooth and i am keeping it oiled. my wife sold some things we didn't need anymore today and split the money with me which brings me to my question. i asked my local shop that has a sp101 he said he would take my service six and $250.00 for it or $350.00 boot on a gp100. my service six is tight on lockup, smooth trigger and dead on accurate out to 20yds which is the farthest i've shot it. i've also got every spare part for it as springs, plungers, pawl, bar ect. i thought about getting ammo and my ccw but thought i would ask this question, the one thing that bothers me is i've got a great gun already and by trading i've heard of new guns having problems even tho it's just a few. if i trade i won't be able to get ammo or ccw but i have 300rds already. so what would ya'll do? trade to a new ruger or keep the service six and get ammo and my ccw? thanks for any help.

I have a Speed Six with 2 3/4" barrel. I like it a lot better than the SP101s I've handled. So I'd keep the Service Six, get a CCW if you don't have one, and buy ammo.

do ya'll think another cylinder would drop right in my gun or would it have to be fitted? also has anyone ever tried this stuff BLUE WONDER ARMADILLO GUN & METAL RUST PREVENTATIVE. thanks

Keep what ya got. An edc gets dirty surprisingly quickly, gets scratched, banged, beat up, etc. and you won't know how it happened. No need for a new gun just to put it thru all that. You've got a great gun already, get your CCW, clean and oil her frequently and go practice.

is the sp stainless? are you concerned with the rust issue on your service six? or is it the size that's got ya thinking? as was stated probably need more info on both guns, personally I like the look of a blued gun and the service six is a good looking piece, if you and it shoot well together then I'd hesitate to trade it unless it just doesn't work for you as a carry gun ie too big etc
good luck

Keep the Service Six and spend the cash on ammo and your CCW permit. In my opinion, the Service Six is a far better gun than the SP101 and the "deal" he's offering you is, to be charitable, not at all to your advantage.

If I were you?
I would keep the perfectly good working gun you have.

And stop obsessing over a freckled cylinder you have been obsessing over in several treads for the last six months or more.

Any older blue gun that is used will get holster wear and freckles on the bluing.
A brand new stainless steel gun will show tiny scratches on the finish the first few times you put it in a holster and take it back out.
But, they are still perfectly good serviceable guns.

A new gun won't be any better then the one you have now, for very long if you use it.

If it continues to bother you that much?
1. DO NOT replace the cylinder with one you buy off eBay!
It very likely won't fit as good as the one you have now.

2. Send the gun back to Ruger for a factory refinish, for much less money.

But, IMO, as a senior citizen myself?
You need to worry about the more important things in life.

Thats my story, and I'm sticking too it!

Get your CCW and some ammo.
I have a Speed-Six (essentially the same gun as your
Service-Six) & an SP101. Both are great guns. The advantage of the Speed-Six is the extra round. The advantage of the SP101 is it is slightly easier to carry. From a cash value standpoint, neither is worth more than the other, given like condition.
If I had one and not the other, and I felt the advantage of the other were of significant value to me, I would maybe do a swap with $50 cash +/-, but no more.
And for gosh sake, quit worrying about the finish on the cylinder. It isn't anything to worry about.

I read on this and other forums every other week about guys that had a Speed Six, sold it and regret it to this day. Don't become one of those.

You've got your bases covered in spades what with all the support parts. And besides, character marks are just that. Unless it gets squished under some road building equipment don't sweat the little marks. It just shows that you and the gun have a history.

Sounds like you've got a good shooting Service Six so why trade it in? I would hang on to it and spend the money on ammo and getting a CCW permit. Or else take the money and see if your LGS will let you put the SP101 on layaway.

- You would be crazy to take that trade value trade value for your Ruger.

- You have a great revolver - keep it and buy the SP101 outright if you want that too.

- Stop obsessing over the minor flaws in your Service Six , and do NOT start any more threads about it.

And , finally , I passed on a Service Six about a year back - dumbest gun decision I have made. If you are that uncomfortable with the minor pitting in yours I will buy it sight unseen for what the LGS is offering plus $50 and I'll eat the shipping !
