Really? How many people here have thought through the scenario that when something wakes them up in the night that they might look outside and see all their car doors open?

Why don't you ask? You might be surprised by the answers you get.

Please note that you used the term "everyone" while I used "many".

I still think that my take on the general awareness of many if not most THR members is more accurate than yours.

BTW, thanks for your service. And that's an honest thanks, not a sarcastic one.

One of the reasons for posting this thread was to bring some of those other scenarios to light. Like I've said, my mind went straight to kids but clearly there are other possibilities.

One of the best reasons to post such scenarios is to discuss the pros and cons of various actions before something happens in the hopes of giving the next potential "victim" some good advice tohelp them survive.

And yes, the pistol was clearly visible. I always leave the front lights on..

Here's a guy who went beyond the living area of his home. Sounds like he got more than he bargained for.

What I can't figure out for the proponents of going outside armed is why they would leave the wife (and kids inside), possibly unprotected--even for a brief moment. There's no percentage in that that I can see.

A Franklin man shot in his garage by an intruder Wednesday night remained at Methodist Hospital today, but Franklin police said the man was believed likely to make a full recovery.

James Duncan, 28, encountered the intruder shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday after he went to investigate a sound in his garage. Duncan lives in the 500 block of Hanna Place in the Canary Creek neighborhood.

After advising his wife to call 911, Duncan took a .22-caliber bolt-action rifle from his home before confronting the intruder. In an ensuing struggle, the intruder grabbed the gun from Duncan and shot him in the shoulder. The suspect then dropped the gun and fled.

"I'd just like to know who did it, and that's what we're working on," said Det. Chris Tennell of the Franklin Police Department.

Police said the man was wearing a T-shirt worn by carnival workers at the Johnson County Fair, which is being held this week in Franklin. But Tennell emphasized that they do not know whether the suspect has any connection to the fair.

Duncan and his family had just returned from the fair themselves and were putting their two children to bed when Duncan heard the noise in his garage, Tennell said.

Doctors opted not to remove the bullet from Duncan's shoulder, Tennell said, fearing they might damage muscle tissue or an artery in trying to extract it.

"Anytime you have a bullet in your body and you're bleeding, that's not good," Tennell said. "But as far as gunshot victims go, they said he should recover fine."

I'd have stayed in the house and called the cops. That's what your taxes pay them to do....you, however, had no backup, and no idea what you were walking out into.

If there's ever a next time, I will certainly do things differently. The biggest thing is that I won't leave the confines of the "safe zone" of the house - and I'll let our sheriff's handle it. As was pointed out, there's nothing in the car that's worth losing my life over! I'm pretty confident that I can keep the perimeter of the house closed -- so I'll work inside the lifelines and let them handle the rest!

+1

I pay (high) taxes. I live in a safe community. The police will be there in minutes. And even if they aren't there fast enough, I've got $1000 deductible on the truck. It would suck if it gets stolen.

But my life, and more importantly my wife's life, is far more important to me than a stupid truck.

Furthermore, you have a far greater chance of prevailing with an ensconced defense than you do leaving the safety of your home.

As I have already stated Jeep in the garage, but if it was outside, point remote and hit Panic alarm, continues HORN Loud, VERY!

Not going outside if my Wife is inside. Not ever.

X-10 cameras are your friends.

I have some X-10's watching outside my home, along with motion detector controlled lights.

If an X-10 motion detector trips, it sounds a chime in the MBR, and turns on the VCR record mode for 3 minutes.
