What do you do every night before bed? Do you have a routine by which you secure your house or ready yourself for bed? For me, I ...

- let the dogs out one last time
- double check the front door is locked and the garage door is down
- lock the slider and ensure the security bar is in place
- shut off all the downstairs interior lights and make sure everything else is off
- check on the kiddo
- plug in my cel phone and double check the alarm
- secure my "nightstand" gun and goodies
- open a window to somewhat hear outside and for fresh air
- kiss the wife and call it lights out

Lock all three front door locks (two on the inner door, and one on the storm door.)

Lock the rear slider and drop the security bar in place (the padlocks on the gates to the rear perimeter fencing are checked at least once a day.)

Turn off all "common-room" lights; the LED night lights then come on automatically.

Set the AC down.

Peek in on my sleeping daughter (5 yoa.)

Pee.

Due to differences in sleep/work habits, my wife and I do not sleep together most days. If we are not, her door is locked (to keep wandering five-year-olds out.) I shower, then go to my room, insert the magazine in my bedside .22 rifle, and place my EDC pistol on top of the high hutch next to the bed. My cellphone goes on the low desk top beneath that, along with my flashlight.

If we are sleeping together, I grab my pistol, flashlight, and phone, and place them on her vanity, which is right next to my side of the bed (the pistol is kept in a retention holster there.)

I nod off to sleep (after any other activity that may occur.)

Double check the doors, flip off the lights, stick in a load of laundry, brush my teeth, wash my face, bathroom, take care of the dogs...

Dump all my EDC into a shoulder bag on my nightstand, plug my phone in nearby, check the alarm clock if tomorrow's activities require such evil, take my AR out of the safe and check it over real quick, lean it against the dresser and flip off the lamp.

I make sure the front and back door are locked. They are about 30 foot from the other so it isn't hard.

I check my revolver to see that it's loaded, and make sure the extra speedloader and flashlight are in the right place on my nightstand.

Then I go smeeps.

I lock doors leading to outside and go to bed. I do have Wingmaster Supermag with night sights, but it remains unloaded with ammo (Fiocchi 7/8oz slugs at 1300fps) in secure lockup. Life is grand.

Very similar to your routine, riceboy72. No kiddos at home, though, and a single-story house.

Oh, and being out in the desert I usually water lawn, gardens, and trees at night so I turn off the sprinklers.

- brush teeth, multivitamin + water

- check doors

- confirm alarm for the next morning's schedule

- stage clothes for the next day, including prepping a duffel bag with a change when plans won't take me straight home after work. As part of staging, I populate tomorrow's pants with my EDC items. My EDC pistol goes into the ccw pouch of my EDC bag, next to the bed.

This is all mainly about convenience. I like to get up and going quickly in the morning, and staging things when I'm alert before bed makes my morning routine a lot faster. It has also helped with response time when I've gotten late calls.

Pet my 90 lb German Shedder, (if you own one, you get the joke) and unlock my gunsafe where my emergency firearms are stored loaded and 10 feet away. Though my go to gun in there is a 20 inch Mossberg 500 8 shot with light and ghost ring sights. Also a KaBar "Bacon Maker" hilt out between the mattress and bed frame. Doors locked, outside light on, and alarm set.

When my wife is home alone, it's the same routine, but she favors a 4 inch GP100 with 158gr Speer gold dots. Either way, you don't wanna mess with my dog Gracie lol

All doors to outside locked. Outside lights on. Garage door down. No loaded firearms on our level. All are in the basement and unloaded.
But I've been thinking about changing that. Just in case. Not sure what direction to go on it. Sounds like shotgun is best bet from what you all have posted.

Brush my teeth, unholster my EDC and place it on the night stand and turn out the light. Kiss the wife and go to sleep. We don't lock doors around here.

Secure doors, activate alarms, set dead man pitfalls, release the moat reptiles, set motion activated machine guns to "auto engage", and put on my fluffy jammies.

:)

Grab revolver, step outside, water yard one last time while looking for shooting stars, Northern Lights, and listening for coyotes or woofs, tell dog to come in, lock door, turn on radio for a few, read a book for a bit,.....plenty of hardware around the place for about any eventuality short of invasion by screaming hoards of Canadians bent on taking over our nice warm country.

Fearless guard dog,..
