Lets say theirs an 800lb Grizzly Charging at you from about 50-100 yards away...

Which Bullet to gram ratio would you rather have?

1 800 gr Barnes 50BMG

14 .223/5.56 55gr

Almost same amount of lead for .223 that account for the one BMG? What would you pick?

The 50BMG...

14 223 will likely be like a trip to the honey pot for a raging Grizzly, and further provoke the creature to rip me into dog food.

There isn't much that a 50BMG will tick off that has fur.

14 223,if you miss with that one 50 bmg, well your up the creek. if i get one shot to his head, well ,there you have it.

I don't know....if you use the .223, and the grizzly finds out you've been shooting at him, he's gonna be real angry. :neener:

Frankly, I'd rather have 6 or 7 .45-70 rounds.

Have you read about the guy with the Lee Enfield Jungle Carbine who stopped his car by the road and was surprised by a large charging grizzly, probably from a shorter range?

Thanks to the very smooth action and his ability to aim well and not to panic , he barely stopped it with four quick shots. That guy deserves an award. My Mosin 44 would take longer, but can stop a large (mellow) black bear with only two shots.

I might trust the LE Jungle Carbine. A guy picked one up at my favorite (really superb) gun store and when allowed to handle it for just a moment, the gun quickly attracted me. Its combat character and compact shape 'grabbed' me, so to speak :).

New guy:
Mini 14, 30, SKS, MN 44 and ancient Savage .22 'war rifle'.

The .223 cartridge is good for several things, but stopping a highly torqued off charging grizzly is NOT on that list. I suspect that penetration is not anywhere near where it should be for this task.

Is this a real question with a point?

On the flip side, if you are squirrel hunting, what would you rather have-- a .22 rimfire or a 300 Win. Mag.?

Caliber is dependant on the need, and one is not inherently superior to another.

I think the point is, would you rather have one effective round that a need demands or multiple less effective rounds in a high stress situation.

I'll take that.

Not to be difficult, but I'd rather have neither. Ideally, a 12 gauge pump loaded with slugs would be my first choice.

Spraying the grizzly with .223 may well do nothing but piss it off.

I guess I'd take my chances with the BMG, since it would actually work if it hit the bear.
