since you got handguns and a shotgun your close encounter situations are taken care of. I would say you are buying for the purpose of rounding out your collection go with a long range tool. .243 .308 or .270

Old thread, but I agree. You need a rifle to be complete. How much rifle is adequate for your area is your call. If money is a concern, now that the panic is over, I'm seeing Chinese SKS's for under $300 locally. If you've got $1,000 to spend, you might consider a DSA Imbel FAL build, but FAL magazines are getting less common and more expensive and .308 ammo isn't cheap.
Mosins are good for their durability. If I get another, it will be a Finn M-39. Once you've owned one, any other Mosin and most other milsurp rifles feel like a waste of time.

I'd get any 30-06 that caught my fancy. Mil-Surp, M1, any well known hunting rifle - what-ever. 30-06 ammo is almost always in stock at the big boxes. I have a couple and they will stop most things that walk on this continent

Of course, now that I have that base covered, I'm a lot more picky. I want a Tikka T3 Hunter in .308 'cause I like them

I want to get that new Kel-tech .22 mag pistol. 30 rounds in one magazine with a barrel long enough to stabilize trajectory and build some velocity. It looks very compact and fun...
