What year was my Smith and Wesson .357 Mag Model 27-2 with 4" barrel pin and resessed cylinder partial serial #651xxx

Welcome to The High Road... :)

I think you might have posted an assembly number.

The serial number should be stamped on the butt, and have a letter preceeding the number. If the revolver has target stocks you may have to remove them to see the number.

Actually I have another number that is five digits long that I believe is the assembly number. I found the five digit number on the trigger housing plate (on the inside) as well as the butt of the gun under the handle, and on the arm that holds the cylinder. But also I did find the serial number, it is N651xxx, instead of the 651xxx that I posted originally. The pistol is an "N" frame and I assumed that was what that was for and that it was not included in the serial number, apperantly I was wrong. Thank You for current help finding the actually serial number and I would greatly appreciate any furthure help on the issue.

BTW- About 99.9% of the 4" 27-2s were made 1979-1981. Prior to 1979 the 4" length was a custom order and is very seldom seen. I have seen exactly one (made in 1963 on special order and inscribed for presentation) in my life. In 1979 the 4" replaced the 3.5" as a standard length.

Also, in 1981 S&W must have been running out of the pinned barrels for the 27-2s (and some other models, too) and a large number, most of the ones I have seen, in fact, have the unpinned -3 barrels. I call these the 27-2.5 models.
