Can someone recommend a powder for 44 mag that I can reload mildly but still get lots of flash, bang and smoke out of? I currently use 2400.

W296
h110

I've seen balls of fire half the size of a small car coming out from my Ruger .357 Magnum SP101 Snubby.

Beat me to it. Was gonna say H-110 and a short barrel. Nice.:)

While these powders (or rather, this powder) are the best for huge muzzle flash, they don't meet his requirement of being capable of producing light loads. There is almost no range for H110/W296. It's all out or nothing.

If you over do it with liquid alox on cast bullets you'll get some pretty obnoxious smoke. Ask me how I know...

Don't know what the flash is like for bullseye in a 44mag, but it's my powder-puff go-to powder for .38spl and .45acp. Alliant has some cast bullet loads with bullseye for both 44mag and 44spl.

I've been accused of shooting black powder with bullseye and cast bullets, but it's all the lube since similar jacketed loads are clean as anything else.

Bullseye is an extremely fast burning powder. As such it tends to be fully ignited before it exits the barrel and doesn't have much flash. It can smoke up the lube though maybe not so well as Titegroup.

Thanks for all the quick replies, I have some Blue Dot on order now :D Also checked out the thread mentioned, lots of good info there!

Quick question, could I actually use black powder in a SRH Alaskan 44 mag and use the same primers/brass/bullets?

LOL

You should see it out of a 500 4" barrel!
The flash is about the size of a small car and the heat feels like you are sitting in front of a campfire to your body front and the heat wave lasts about a second or two AFTER THE SHOT!

You want to turn some heads and have people running for cover from one blast?
500 Magnum Snubbie or 4" and W296 near max, or worked up to max or H110 (same thing)!

Work those loads up CAREFULLY~!

yes use leadcast only, ive done it out of my 357 magnum colt python, just be carefull cause cleaning downtime sucks, and after few months half of them are duds

As I understand it, with Black Powder, cleaning should involve soapy water, which then brings on a whole new problem if you don't get all the water out of the gun. At least with Black Powder guns, they are made to come apart to be cleaned in a bathtub.

Correct me if I am wrong on this -- as I would hate to see someone use Black Powder, only to open up a whole other can of worms.:cuss:

but still get lots of flash, bang and smoke out of?
I must be getting really old. Flash, bang, and smoke has never done anything to improve my shooting proficiency or accuracy.

And a lot of money has been spent in the last century trying to develop modern smokeless powder to give higher performance, with less flash, bang, and smoke.

If you want flash, bang, and smoke, 4th of July fireworks are much cheaper then a .44 Mag in the grand scheme of things.

Wake up man! This is the 21st Century! This is like reaching the end of the internet. All you can do, now that the technology has solved all the problems, is to turn around and head back the other way.

Blinding light, choking smoke, deafening noise... that's the next frontier!

:neener:

Sometimes you just need a round to make the group of hoodlums in the next lane shooting their rented Glock sideways get all quiet all of a sudden

Man, I'm glad I don't live in the city.
I left that city life behind me many many years ago (as in DECADES ago)!

I understand what you are saying!
LOL

Just rehearse so you talk like Clint Eastwood.
