I'm not sure what you mean by "nice" wood stock. The 30AS has a stained birch stock. Most people would consider walnut to be nice. Birch is functional though.

A good condition 30AS is worth $300-$325. If you can get one for under that, you've done good.

Good luck.

For some reason most people anymore cannot recognize the difference between a nice piece of walnut and a stick of firewood. I typically see used Marlins with firewood for stocks selling for exactly the same prices as the Marlins with real walnut stocks.

The prices Abel listed seem pretty normal around here for a Marlin 30-30 lever action. I'd hold out for a 336 with real walnut at about the same price. The 30AS "SHOULD" be selling for at least $100 less. But since most buyers anymore can't seem to tell the difference most gunshops are selling them all at about the same prices. I typically see only around $25 difference in prices and very often they are exactly the same.

Other than the wood, all of the Marlins are pretty much the same and it should shoot just fine. If you can get it at a fair price and if the cheaper wood doesn't matter then it should be a good gun for you.
