What's a good price for a Savage .243 package?

So a buddy has a Savage .243. I can't remember the model number but it's the package combo deal from Wal-Mart. He has had it a little over a year but he isn't the best when it comes to taking care of guns however even with minimal care it seems like being that new it shouldn't have many if any issues. This package is right at $400 + tax new at WalMart.

Is $250 a fair deal for it? Good, great, horrible, or what? I don't really want a .243 but for that price it seems hard to pass up.

Unless he has mangaged to ruin it, that is a fair price, but not a steal for a used Savage. It is a good price if this is a more modern combo w/ the accutrigger. If this was a combo, I would put little faith in the stock chinese scope & rings; they are generally worthless & may be the reason he is dissatisfied with it. As for the cartrige, you can find a bazillion posts in this forum claiming it is light for anything north of hamster. For the hunting I do in South / Central Texas, it will cleanly take any native game out to ridiculous distances.

As for Savage in general, they are exceptionally accurate out of the box. I would check out the bore, look at the muzzle crown to ensure he has not dropped it on the business end, look at the breech face for any dimpling as he may have dry-fired it a gazillion times, if all looks OK, fork over the cash & run.

The thing about package guns is the optics and mounts are so unbelievably cheap and barely serviceable they add NOTHING to the value of the rifle.

that is a great price, if the scope still works and isn't trash. Otherwise, get a bran new savage or stevens, plain rifle, for 300 bucks or less.

I don't know if he will take $250 that's what I offered him. It's the model with the accu trigger which is what I like about it. Has the cheap Simmons Blazer scope and as of right now it still works.

He doesn't really want to sell it I don't think. He says and has been saying since he got it a little over a year ago how much he loves it. I asked him a few weeks ago if he wanted to sell it after hunting season. He told me no that he loved it and didn't want to get rid of it unless someone payed him what he paid so he could go get another one.

Then he called me this week and he has to have some money for bills that he is getting behind on. So he said he would take $325 at first and I declined. I told him I'd pay $250 and split the cost of the FFL transfer fee's for us and that's all I could do. He told me let him think about it and he would let me know today. I have a feeling he will take it unless he can find someone else to pay more for it.

Probably not a bad thing; I would get on Gunbroker & start looking for similar deals. For not a lot more, you can get exactly what you want.

Yeah it was one of those things where it wasn't exactly what I wanted but for that price I don't know that I would have been able to pass it up. However, if I'm going to spend much more I'd probably rather just spend more and get exactly what I want.

Well, that's a big part of it I don't think I really want a .243. I want something semi small but I'm not sure I want it to be quite that small. I think I want something like a 25-06 or similar. At the same time I think a .243 would probably work there are just other calibers I think I'd rather have.

The 25/06 is a better deer gun than the 243. However I have killed deer with both, and I would say that all them dropped within a few feet. Both are great within 300 yds, but the 25/06 takes over after that distance. I'm not saying that a 243 won't kill at 300+, it will. The 243 is a short action gun and the 25/06 is a long, so the gun will be lighter with a 243 in the same type gun. I have an 25/06 A-bolt Browning and a 243 Win. in a 700 short action BDL and the A-bolt weighs less and is better handling.

Since you have both how is the kick of the 25-06 compared to the .243? I want something with less kick than the 30-06 I currently use.

I'd be using it for deer and honestly most shots would be 200 yards or under. However, I also want something where if I decide to do some paper punching can do decent out to 400-500 yards if possible.

I just picked up a brand new Savage Model 11 package gun chambered in .243 Win last week. It was $339 with a 9x Simmons scope at a local army/navy/sporting store. I would say $250 for yours used is a good deal, but you can find a new Savage rifle for not much more.

I don't think the Model 11 has the accutrigger, the Rifle/scope combo they sell at Dick's Sporting Goods doesnt.

This one does not have the accutrigger. I found it's got about a 4 pound pull out of the box. I can make about an inch and a half group at 100 yards. It's a nice rifle for the price I paid. It seems that the accutrigger models are about $100 more or so for each comparable model.
