I want a vest that is modular, for attaching various doohickeys & pouches, which in turn hold mags or whatever, and is hydration-compat. And economy; nothing too fancy. Please kind in mind I know virutually nothing about load-bearing & other vests. Thanks!

Also, on that subject, what about a vest that is also lev iii-ish flak vest in addition to above components - any such critter exist? The NOLA/SHTF scenario got me to thinking about this.

Dh has a nice tac vest, black hawk industries. It does everything you want and he didn't pay to much for it at the time but that was a few years back...
It hold a camel back and lots of mags, instead of the pistol holder you get more mag pouches. has all the attachments for thigh holsters all black pretty nice and well constructed.
hope this helps.

oh yea here is a link to there web site

Most of the "high-end" vests have the capability built-in, as hydration packs have gotten really popular. At least more popular than canteens.

To be honest though, any LBE that leaves your back free should work fine. Buy a hydration pack, put it on, and wear the LBE over it.

GGB, there are several packages such as the Eagle CIRAS which would more than take care of your armor and load bearing needs, but you mentioned the word "economy" in your post, so I will not mention them.

Quality modular equipment at a price you can afford.

(Yes, I have been mentioning them a lot lately, no I do not work for them.)

Good luck!
