I've been given the opportunity to go to the Indiana State Indoor Pistol Championships at the end of March. The match is half rimfire, half centerfire. All I've ever shot competition-wise to this point is .22LR, so I don't know who makes accurate ammo I can use in my Kimber Custom Target II. I know reloading is the best way to go, but I won't be able to do that until I move into my rented house in August. So what factory stuff is good?

It'd be better to load your own, but Federal has a Gold Medal target load that should work just fine though it may be a little pricey.

Indoor you don't really need great match ammo. Most ammo is plenty accurate out to 25 yards. You need an accurate gun though.

I agree with bdutton about the ammo the gun is bigger factor in indoor short distance. The Kimber you have should do quite well for that shoot. Good luck and tell us how you make out at the shoot.

Accuracy of any given load may, and probably will, vary depending upon the gun it is fired in. This is more obvious in rimfires, but holds true for centerfires as well. A friend and I shoot nearly identical Kimbers; when firing the same load, from the same box of ammo, the guns will display significantly different accuracy in many cases. His gun has shown an affinity towards Remington UMC 230 gr. FMJ, mine shoots groups twice the size regardless of which one of us does the actual firing. My gun likes Fiocchi 230 gr. FMJ, his gun groups poorly with the same round.

But a few different boxes, mix up the manufacturers a bit, find what your gun really likes, then buy a ton of that round. Try to stick with boxes bearing the same lot number.

Good luck!

Federal Match loads would be my first choice. They work very well in everything I have tried.

After that, you need to shoot different ammo in your gun to see what your gun likes. I have one that just loves Remington UMC 230 FMJ, of all things. It it is capable of shooting the UMC at one inch at 25 yards. This is a bit tighter than Federal Match.

In my experience, you can never tell how factory ammo will work until you try it. It all depends on what your gun likes. The usual suspects are already listed here for you to try but I think you'll need to get one box of each and try them all. One brand will typically shoot tighter.

PMC (S Korean) FMJs . I wish they are still available. I got some many years back with excellent groupings.
