So my wife (hearing her day where is the trigger assembly group put a smile on my face) and I inventoried the kit last night and all parts are there...despite Traditions garbage packing...Midway USA did a great job though in shipping it fast and securely. So hats off to them. Also Ground is 3 days to my house which is nice. The only problem is a part of the stock looks like too much wood may have been removed, but I'm not sure. It's where the lock would fit in, but it's not a perfect circle, part of the right edge is a little chipped, it's hard to explain in text, so I'll post pics later.

Does anyone have any suggestions on potential stock colors, preferably made by Mini wax?

I'm hoping to have it setup for the Deer Season Opener. It's a bit optimistic, but I'm hoping I might get it done by then. Still a little unsure on how to do it, so I'm sure I'll be pestering people here with questions.

gfan, if that stock is walnut, I'd use miniwax "special walnut 224" as it really brings out the grain in the wood and gives you a darker stain, which I believe is what the arms back in the early 1800's used. Further if the stock is just a hardwood such as birch, I'd still use the same miniwax, as I just finished a Traditions Flintlock pistol using said stain. Go ahead and check my past posts and I'm sure you'll find the pics.

Loose, excellent thank you so much! I love how it looks on your's that you did. I'll have to check on the wood type. A part of me want's to think the manual said Brich somewhere.

I guess my only concern now is the stock being defective. Like I said it's the old where the lock is, but imagine part of the circle being a little messed up. Well I'll post the picture later tonight.

I can't wait to post them. If anything else it gets me more and more used to working with tools, which is a skill that I should most likely work into developing. I'm just nervous of screwing up the wood, I'm going to take it very very slow, since I have a lot of time when I can hunt locally in January. That said I am concerned about the stock. I really want to sort that out quickly so I can have it serviced/returned to Midway vs dealing with Traditions themselves.

Well Muzzleloader did open from October 13-20 and deer archery has been going on for a while, September in my stomping grounds of the 5C/5D Special Regulations Area. But besides the MZ Week and October 18-20 special deer season, no one should be shooting anything unless it's Archery.

I'm lucky though because normally to hunt in December-January it has to be a Flintlock, BUT since I live in the SRA we get Anter/Antlerless season from November 26-December 8 and Antlerless from December 26-January 26! The best part of this is because of the birth of my daughter, my vacation days got used up (which is fine it was for a good reason), but they reset to 3 weeks on January 1st!

Well I did hear a claim, when I was flipping around during Election Night Coverage, that the state with the most NRA members anywhere in the US is PA. No idea if Tucker Carlson* was just pulling it out the rear or if it's true. I like to think it is.

*He was trying to point out that outside of Philly and Pittsburgh the state is very conservative...I disagree, but that's neither here or there.

If you are talking about the egg shaped hole towards the back of the relief for the lock, I don't think you have anything to worry about. The lever from the seer sticks through that opening in order to engage the trigger mechanism. I don't believe that area is structural in the act of recoil. The force generated by the shot should be on the lug in the forestock and the butt of the barrel. With the lock, trigger assembly, and trigger guard in place your stock should be fine. You probably want to clean up the rough edges with an Xacto knife or something similar so the loose ends aren't shedding. I finished my pistol kit from Dixie last weekend with about 6 coats of Birchwood Casey Tru Oil and a coat of wax. I thought it highlighted the walnut grain well but it did not darken it if that is the effect you want on the finished product.

Yeh gfan, you shouldn't have any trouble with that "hole" there you're talking about at all, like steel horse rider was talking about, all ya gotta do is clean it up a bit. Once you got the plate in where it is inletted, along with you're trigger assembly everything should blend in just fine. Remember your tang screw is the most important screw to hold everything as far as the lock together. Some times you might want to drill the wood just a tad bit wider so the screw will mate with the forward hole in the trigger assembly. You'll see what I'm talking about when you get that far. Any way have fun putting that puppy together.

I like using MinWax 2716 Dark Walnut (stain only) followed by spar varnish (verathane).
