You may have already seen this but in case you missed it, Glock has reissued the G17...as a collectible!
Glock G17 Gen 1 9mm Luger 4.49in Black Pistol - 17+1 Rounds | Sportsman's Warehouse (sportsmans.com)

This strikes me as funny because I remember the disdain many had for the original plastic fantastic when it first came out, and it also seems like a step backward. I mean, we're up to gen 5 with some models! But if you didn't jump on the bandwagon now's your chance to complete the collection.:)

I wasn't one of the first, but I was an early adopter and I clearly remember some of the snide comments I received at the range with my "toy" gun.
My toy has now attained official collector status!

Shall I frame it, mount it on the wall in a place of honor, and build a shrine?

Nope! After thousands of trouble free rounds the old girl will continue to eat lead and terrorize soda cans. Besides, it's the only gun my wife likes to shoot, and I kinda like having her with me on those cold nights spent camping out in the middle of nowhere.

I had an early production G17, with a serial number starting with the letter "A" followed by another letter then by three numbers. When I got it I was more interested in it's non-traditional, innovative design and construction than I was in it's ergonomics. For my smaller size hands it didn't have the same comfortable grip compared to something like my Browning Hi-Power. That and the slide seemed awfully wide, especially for a 9mm. To my way of thinking the G17 should have been more along the lines of their G48, a Glock that feels and handles great for me!

I like it. Got no use for rails and optics and serrations everywhere. Might actually get one.
Interesting the pictured example says "Made in Austria." Didnt think we could get Austrian production here anymore.
Things may have changed but as far as I know most Glocks are still imported, while the different models can be manufactured here in the US the only one that is 100% is the G42 all the rest mostly come out of Austria.

Soooo, this is actually a 17.5, just in a 17.1 suit? No biggie; Smith does the same with their 'classic' reissues.
Had a 17.2 for awhile, and miss it from time to time.

How does Glock get around laws in states that ban low melting temperature zinc, pot metal, etc. frames when they are plastic, which I assume has a lower melting point?

Those Saturday Night Special laws typically targeted zinc alloy frames. They are really only a small handful of states that have them on the books. Poly framed handguns have been around since 1970. It was never really about the melting point.

Heck, Hi Point uses a zamak slide, but no zinc in their frames so are sold pretty much everywhere.

Does that box have the auto-discharge feature?

My brother's early G17, one of the first on the US commercial market, had that style of box.
Is that the plug in the middle where the trigger guard is? If it is then I guess it does .

Stay safe.

I always thought it odd that they would ship a container where you place something in the trigger guard right next to the trigger.

Had the tupperware for the 17.2, and I assumed a cable lock that passed through the plastic box, and the trigger guard, for safe storage.
Can't say I'm crazy about putting things through the trigger guard, but with an empty gun...

I completely forgot about the box! You guys crack me up.
I don't have mine. With a few exceptions I always toss the boxes, I just don't have room for them.

@ CajunBass, I didn't buy the reissue, I was referring to my original bought, jeez I don't know how many years ago. My apologies, I could have been a lot more clear about that.

I have smaller hands too but didn't have any issues with the grip until my hands got sweaty during one particularly hot outing. At that point I added one of the slip on grips, I think a Hogue? With finger grooves.
Effectively turning it into a 17.3. HA!
