Years ago I dumped my Sigs in favor of pairing down my collection to 1911s and Glocks (which was all I was shooting). I determined that DA/SA just wasn't for me, and I don't really miss my Sigs (maybe my old P220 a bit).

Back when I had my P220 I always dreamed of a P220 compact (or P245) but they just weren't to be had for a reasonable price, so the dream faded.

Some time ago I got an option to trade a P245 for one of my Glock 19s (which I don't shoot much as I prefer the G17) and decided to jump back on the Sig train.

Got the P245 to the range the last two days and have some observations. Sorry no pictures as I didn't have my camera handy, perhaps next range trip in a week or so.

I unboxed the Sig and, yeah, its a bit used. Some few scrapes and some finish wear, but not too much. Looks like it was carried much more than it was shot (perhaps, more on that later). Stock sights had been replaced with some XS Big dots (faded) and those will have to go, quick to use up close but I like a bit more precision and I just can't get the appropriate consistent POA for that big dot.

Gun shoots great when I do my part, best group was about a quarter, off hand, at 10 yards with 1 flier. The flier was my constant issue with shooting DA/SA guns, sure I can get that first long pull accurate if I really concentrate, but if I'm trying to go rapidly, its pretty tough. Shot reliably with the six round SIG mag, but did fail to lock back on the last round occasionally, a few chokes with my reloads but that seems to be expected for a non-Glock and my reloads (rainier 230 grains over autocomp, I plan to try different bullets next time I order). It came with an off brand mag that was not so reliable, but I have an ACT 8 rounder on its way, which I've always had good luck with for my P220. Size is great, love it and it will carry well (my plan for it).

Today I ran some drills from the holster and varying ranges; 3, 5, 7, 10 yards. Mostly drawing, moving and double tapping. I found that on those drills (and probably due to lots of dry firing last night) I was only tossing the first shot at the 10 yards and further, and even then it was certainly "minute of bad guy" on my targets. I was very happy with the results, on par with my other smaller guns (Kimber Ultra Carry, Glock 26) and certainly good enough for me to consider it carry worthy.

Overall, good gun. Might just replace my Kimber in my holster occasionally, perhaps more than occasionally once I get better sights on it.

BONUS: Yesterday at the range a guy was reviewing the P320 VTAC (9mm) and let me put a mag through it and, boy, was I impressed. My Glock 17 is my "gold standard" for full size 9mm. If it ain't MUCH better than the G17, I don't see the value in picking it up. This is the first one I've shot that I would consider it (I've tried various XD, HK, standard P320, M&P, Walther... I think that's it). Really liked the flat trigger and the sights, and it shot like a dream. I'll have to keep an eye out.

QUESTION: I suspect the recoil spring might need changing, as it was flinging brass pretty far. I've read the P239, Sig Pro and P245 all use the same recoil spring. Is this true? Any sig folk wanna tell me what spring to pick up?

This is most likely due to your thumb riding the slide lock lever. This is a common characteristic of Sig P series pistols brought on by the slide lock placement and the currently favored thumbs forward grip everyone seems to be using. I don't call it a flaw because I've never understood what the big deal is if the slide locks back or not. If I have a proper sight picture I can't tell if the slide is locked back or not. I shoot until I count the correct number of rounds or until it goes click then I eject the magazine and reload using an overhand grip on the slide and never using the slide lock lever for releasing the slide so the slide being locked back is immaterial to me. As for your groups, I've never been overly concerned with rapidly fired groups as long as they are approximately the size of my fist. I think I would rather my assailant have multiple holes in them than one really deep hole.

I've never handled a P245 but have wanted to, even though I'm not enamored with .45acp I would like to see how that model shoots in my hand compared to the P239 I normally carry.

Ah, right. I forgot that part of sig controls and I certainly ride that part of the grip due to shooting 1911s so long. Not going to worry about changing my grip, I'll just deal with it.
