What's on the bottom of my Leupold scope?

I recently put a Leupold VX3i LRP scope on one of my rifles. I liked it so much that I ordered a second one from Midway USA for another gun. This second one was listed as "blemished" and was $150 off. They said it could be missing manuals or accessories, have a damaged box, or have minor cosmetic damage.

I looked over it pretty carefully when it arrived and everything seems ok. The only thing I noticed was on the bottom of the scope, where the serial and model number are there's a little circular "button" and the rubber/plastic/whatever is a little crooked. What is that thing? I don't see it described anywhere. I'm at work now and don't have it with me so I can't post a pic, but can later on if need be.

I called Leupold and the guy I talked to asked me to send a picture of it. He just got back to me and said it is the cover for the nitrogen filling setup and they sometimes move around a bit and it's not a big deal if it should happen to fall off, it still won't be affected by the elements, although they'll send me a new cover if I want. I was going to just put a piece of tape over it and forget about it.

Glad it wasn't a major issue for you and I'm glad that now I know for sure what it is. I was thinking perhaps you could get something like black electrical tape and cut out a small piece to go over that spot. It's on the underside of the scope so it won't be too visible. I learn lots of interesting stuff on THR.

That's exactly what I did is put a piece of black electrical tape over it. Leupold is sending off a replacement cover but I doubt I'll put it on any time soon. I've got the scope mounted now and to take that cap off and put a new one on I'd probably have to take the scope off. I don't really feel like rezeroing everything
