Hey folks,
I had another thread a week or so ago looking for a scope base for my Mexican Mauser sporter. I've done a lot of reading and tried a handful of bases/rings but nothing fits. The Mexican Mauser is a small ring 98 so it's a bit odd and some of the parts don't interchange with standard large ring 98's or other small ring Mausers. I read in a few places that scope bases for other small ring Mausers would fit my action but I tried a couple and the rear ring was too tall. The front ring (and maybe rear bridge, I don't know this rifle's history) on my action has been ground down just a little so that may account for some of the fitment issues but the rear base for a small ring Mauser is about 0.085" too tall and I doubt that the front ring had that much ground off of it because the crest is still 90% there. So, long story short, I don't think I'm gonna find a scope base that fits off the shelf and I think I'll have to modify one.
So my question is, which scope base/rings would be the easiest to modify? From what I've seen it looks like the Talley signature bases/rings might be easy because the mating surface between the base and ring is flat. The contour of the rear bridge of this action isn't perfectly round-i.e. not perfectly circular-so removing metal from a rear base while maintaining the proper contour would be difficult. The Talley bases and rings look classy too so that's nice.
Another option I thought of was to use a one piece base like a Leupold or Redfield. I could affix sandpaper to the rear bridge and just move the scope base back and forth over it until the correct amount of metal is removed and the base is making full contact at both mounting points. With a one piece base I wouldn't have to worry about ring misalignment, and using the rear bridge as a glorified sanding block would ensure that the proper contour is maintained on the bottom of the scope base, assuming I don't move the base side to side at all while sanding.
Thoughts? Anyone done anything like this before?
