Sure they had a reason for switching to plastic followers and baseplates- theyre cheaper.

Ive never seen a black follower crack, but plenty of the yellow ones. My all steel 645 magazines have been flawless.

All plastics break down over time and those OEM grip modules arent getting any younger. Ive seen a 4566 and a 3913 with broken grips. Both cracked right at the retaing pin hole.
No thanks.

I dont care for the rubber Hogues, though at one time they made decent wood grip modules for the 3rd Gen. Smiths, not sure if they are still available.
Hogue still makes their wood grips.

The ES1 marked magazine is the final iteration of the 45xx magazine and it was after a long series of revisions. The yellow followers were the third upgrade to the magazine. In total the magazines had a six revisions.

The all metal 645 magazine with metal follower was first which was soon ditched for the orange follower due to jams with the Speer 200gr Flying Ashtray JHP load in the 645 and 745.

Then the 4506 magazine came with polymer baseplate since the metal ones when dropped deformed and couldn't be fixed. The polymer baseplate instead of being dented, took the beating or protected the mag body and allowed for quick replacement if damaged. They came with the orange follower was soon replaced by the yellow follower as further advancements happened with JHP designs. That was further upgraded and improved with the first ES1 black follower magazine and the final version was adding an additional crimp to the feed lips to ensure positive feeding.

The magazine for the .45 Automatic by S&W went through numerous upgrades starting in the 1980s and ended in the mid 2000s. S&W kept right on making a 3rd Gen .45 Automatic until 2011-2012 for the WVSP. Which I have and it rivals anything made by the Performance Center.

You would probably have to buy used to get a quality .45 in the $600.00 range especially now. I see the CZ 97b quoted by some as $650.00 NIB. If you could get one for that I would be all over it. A year ago mine cost $829.00 and I was glad to find it. I would buy another at that $650.00 price in a heartbeat. IMG_3452.JPG

Here's some current DA/SA full-size semi-auto .45's in your price range on Gunbroker, with current bid and link to auction:

S&W 645 $650 https://www.gunbroker.com/item/886679249

FNH FNX-45 $650 https://www.gunbroker.com/item/886147205

H&K USP-45 $514 https://www.gunbroker.com/item/886686993

Ruger American $650 https://www.gunbroker.com/item/886129521

Sig Sauer P320 $550 https://www.gunbroker.com/item/886489152

If it were me, I think I'd tag that H&K as first choice on my watchlist. It's still got 13 days to run, and will probably get bid up, but worth keeping an eye on. Anywhere near your ballpark would be a great catch, though the chances are slim. The FNH has got a little over a day to run and only one bid, so if that's up your alley, you might consider jumping on it. The S&W is a great pistol, but is already start-priced to market, so won't attract bargain-hunters. It's got two and a half days to run and still no bids, so you might be able to get it for that price.

The HK will be sold at $750 by the time that auction ends. The price of an auction is meaningless until the last 20 minutes of it.

It seems the only one I'm gonna find that's gonna be what I want at the price I want is the Ruger P Series or a Beretta Px4. Not gonna go with the Bersa.

Whoever's got authority can close this thread.
