Anyone thumb cock their DA/SA's for SA only?

There are alot of DA/SA pistols I'm interested in but don't really care for the first DA pull. I "grew-up" on "SA only" pistols (BHP's & 1911's) and am comfortable with condition 1 carry. I know some guys, especially left handers that like SA only's, carry their pistols with hammer down on a live round with the intention of "thumb-cocking" it if it ever was to be called into service. I figure carrying a DA/SA pistol with the intent of thumb-cocking would be pretty much the same.

Your thoughts???

I guess you could...I know a few guys that do...but me, I just commited some time & effort & learned the transition and shoot DA/SA. Once you learn it, it's no big deal

It is possible to shoot well in the DA mode. Just takes commitment to do so.

I have only seen one guy who was really dedicated to it. He shot a P229 for all purposes including IPSC and would thumb cock it instead of doing the crunch-tick. He was not very fast at it even though he did it regularly and it did not look real stable to me.
I belive in shooting a gun in its intended mode. Cocked and locked and DA/SA both work if you will train, study, and practice. I thumb cock my SAA, not my autopistols or DA revolvers.

Mulliga -- I do own a BHP and 1911 and do carry them on occasion. The "occasionally" is what I'm trying to change. I really should try and carry more often but those two pistols can be a challenge to conceal depending on how I dress. I do love the feel of steel in my hands though as opposed to plastic.I guess I could go with a compact/commander/officers 1911, or even a subcompact 3" 1911 but I wanted to try something new.


I have been specifically eyeballing the CZ PCR or P01 for 9mm and the CZ 97 for 45 acp. Wish they made the P01 and PCR with the cocked and locked option and wish they made an alloy compact single stack CZ 97. I thought about a compact CZ 75 but the weight is still a little much for what I am looking for (wish they had an alloy version).

I used to always thumb back the hammer at the range on my Beretta 96, and even my Redhawk.

Lately, on the auto's I have been doing DA first shot, and of course SA followups. My 96 and CZ97 will be occasionally used as CCW guns, along with my DAO SP101.

DA isn't bad when you get used to it. It does take a bit of practice to get good and consistant with it though.
