I have a 1911 with a brushed stainless finish on the frame. While putting my slide stop in, I scratched the frame in the usual location, ie, a nice idiot mark is now on my frame.

I tried gently brushing it with some fine steel wool, but that didnt really make much difference.

Is there a better way to get rid of my idiot mark? Should I use a coarser steel wool? Or perhaps a Dremel with a bronze brush or polishing wheel on it?

Any help is appreciated.

what brand is it? my dad had a similar thing happen to one of his kimbers, they refinished it for him, as well he messed up the screw on the adjustable sights, they took out the old one and out him on a new set. didn't cost him anything.

Kimber, but it is a brushed stainless finish, which i think would be easier to take out than their usual stainless finish. Its not important enough to send back to Kimber.
alright got it, sorry i couldn't be more help.

A purple Scotch Brite pad can be used to give a fine brushed finish on stainless. If the scratch is too deep, you may have to sand it first.

Very fine grit wet/dry sandpaper (400, 600, 1000, 2000, whatever it takes to match the satin polish) glued to flat glass and some careful 'pushing' along the grain of the steel.

Beadblasting works great, but you have to do the whole frame at least, or the whole gun to get an even and nice appearance again.

I bought this Colt with a very bad idiot mark that even went up onto the slide.

beadblasting, and then repolishing the sides of the slide fixed it up like new. Bought for $350. looking BAD, traded at $650.... 45STAINLESSCommander.gif

Try the Scotch Brite pad. I think the purple is more fine than the green. If you want to go more fine then try a Brillo pad.
