What's the best weight bullet for 1:9 twist?

Bushmaster AR 15, 20" barrel, 1:9 twist. What do you feel is the best weight bullet? Strictly punching paper, 100 - 200 yards.

55 - 60 grain will do as well as anything for that use.

I have a 1:9 twist barrel that only shoots 52's

It shoots patterns with 75's, and doesn't shoot that well with 69's.

With 52's I get these little knots at 200 yards if there's no wind or a following wind. CCI primers, 26.5gr 748, Winchester or LC brass.

I think 1:9 does best with 55-62g bullets, but I have shot 69g bullets without any big drop in accuracy.

Agree with NuJudge; I had a 9 twist that was more accurate with 52s and a 12 twist that does better with 60s. If the twist is adequate to stabilize the bullet, accuracy will have to be determined by shooting the individual gun.

"Overstabilization" is not a real factor with good quality bullets, although you can blow a thin jacketed varmint bullet up by shooting it at high velocity from a faster twist than necessary.

55-62 (sometimes 69) grain in my experience. i am really suprised to hear that so many ppl use 52's with any sort of precision. just goes to show that you are going to have to do a little experimenting to find out what shoots best for u.

Well Every Rifle Shoots Different Even With The Same Twist And You Have To Break In Your Barrel And Handloading Vs Factory Loads Can Make A Differance Lots Of Variables You Will Have To Try Different Loads And See.

In my Bushie Varminter, 1-9. 50 gr Nosler BT's, 26.0 Varget, WW cases, Fed Match Primers. These shoot so well that I haven't tried anything else yet. With a 6.5x20 Leupold off a solid bench we shoot groups slightly over dime size at 250 yards.
