What's the Deal with Cabela's Gun Library Prices?

I think each store is run differently. What may be high at one store may be just right or even low at another. They don't always have the right person making those decisions at the stores.

While to my knowledge Bass Pro shops doesn't sell used guns....

The Gun Library must be working out for Cabelas because Bass Pro Shops has jumped on the band wagon; they now have a "Fine Gun Room" section on their website http://finegunroom.basspro.com/index.html#
I haven't been to my local BPS in at least 6-8 months, so I don't know if they have a Fine Gun Room at the store(s) of if this is just a interweb thing...

I don't know a lot about the value of used/collector guns, but anytime I've ventured into a Cabela's Gun Library, the prices are crazy out of line.

If you are un-familar with pricing then how do you know they are "crazy out of line" ? just because something costs more then you'd pay doesn't mean it's not a value.

While it wasn't in the "Gun Library" I did buy a used shotgun at Cabelas once and I actually got a good deal. I walked it from the used rack over to a guy in the library and told him I'd give them $x amount for the gun and he said deal. When we did the paperwork he knocked off another $20 without me asking. I've seen some auctions end at about $200 more than what I spent for the same gun.

That being said there are a lot of used guns there that are overpriced compared to other places I've been. Doesn't bother me one bit...it's a free market. It is a little funny when the used guns are the same price as the new ones though.

Cabelas can be overpriced unless you play their game, and I play it. They send very short term coupons with purchase minimums, and their visa accumulates bonus cash quickly. For customers who regularly buy & maximize the coupons, you can regularly save 20-30%.

As for the guns, I have had them special order at a sale price for a custom gun, and got a deal I could not match on any of the auction sites. They have their place, I like the culture & selection offered, and I enjoy shopping there. In short, it is worth it for me if you take advantage of the promo's. Like all retailers, some items will have ridiculous mark-up, while other items can be reasonable.

At Cabelas I get some smokin hot ammo deals every once in a while, because they make a lot of mistakes.

As for the gun room, you have to haggle. The longer a gun sits there, the more you will be able to get em down.

I have had great luck with gun broaker on old and new firearms. I can find guns that are not easily located and get a good price. Sure i pay about $25 for shipping and a $10.00 transfer fee to my ffl dealer. But i pay no taxes. Big savings on say a $1000 gun. Like any thing you buy do your homework.

it depends on the gun.....over on another forum, a fellow shooter bought a very high end, virtually unfired Beretta sporting shotgun for a lot less than what other regular shops are selling close to new/LNIB the same exact model....so if they are sitting on a high dollar item that has a very limited market appeal, they will tend to deal more so than on regular items.

Overall they tend to be high but they have a higher overhead than the local guy down the street.
