I don't own Glock (yet), but am eyeing up the 19 for the collection someday. What is the difference between the different generations of Glocks, and which generation is preferred?

That's a hell of a question to answer in detail. I would start here:http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=5&f=13&t=91249

Simple run down:

GEN1:Full, smooth pebble texture.

GEN2:Rough Texture on the front and back straps.

GEN3:Accessory rail, thumb rests and finger grooves added.

GEN4:Replaceable back straps, reversible mag catch, RTF3 texture, dual recoil spring assembly and major parts alterations making them mostly incompatible with previous generations that in my opinion makes them a different model as opposed to a new "generation."

I prefer pre-GEN4 Glock's, but that's just me.

Thanks for the link Reaper, there's a lot to know. i enjoyed the 100,000 round test article. I wonder how many other guns could stand up to this?
