What's the most crazy thing you've ever done with spent brass?

I've used various calibers as punches to make bolt hole in gaskets.

Made ashtrays out of 76 MM shells

I've got a 76mm shell that I made a bullet for out of oak - Cool doorstop

Used brass to clean files with ( crush the end and rub across the file)

used them for powder dippers for reloading (solder a handle on them)

The only non-standard thing I've done with spent brass is use 9mm brass as hearing protection when I forgot my plugs. Prolly looked funny, but it sealed real well. Your ear canal may vary...

Mostly I use spent brass to........make new ammo!

If you're not familiar with the boy scouts, they have a group within the organization called the Order of the Arrow. They try to maintain the connection to Native American culture. Part of that is the dance team that really gets into the history of authentic costumes and dances. Originally they used dried deer "toes" for bells. After cartridge arms took over the used empty cases instead. Different tone, and a bit louder.

So all that was to say I donated a bag of brass to the local chapter for that part of their costumes.

Craziest Use for Spent Brass

When I was about 12, a friend and I took a spent 12 ga. shotgun shell and filled it with strike-anywhere match heads and sealed the open end with hot wax. We the set it on a piece of concrete and I proceeded to hit it with a sledge hammer. One heck of a bang and the fireball set my pants lergs on fire.

Nowadays spent brass is used to make black powder measures.

"It's a cartridge in a bare tree."

I'm going to have to remember that one. It'll go great with the red and green shot shells crimped onto string lights that a buddy of mine put in his shop last year.

i make maille (chainmaille, some call it... www.mailleartisans.org) and i am using spent .22LR shells for danglies.

.22LR fits perfectly inside a .222 shell. don't know what to use it for, it's just cool.

Over at ar15.com there is a guy who uses spent 22lr brass to make a 223 bullet jacket. He then uses lead wire to fill it and has a 223 bullet that is pretty darn accurate.

If you run a search you might find the company selling the stuff, my bookmarks are in shambles after some puter problems so I no longer have the direct link to the thread.

Anyway, I thought this was a great use for brass.

I have used brass to cut holes in gasket material or thick rubber sheets I was doing something with, I think I was making pads for bolting down stuff to a work bench and wanted the rubber in there for a vibration absorber.

Right now I have a bunch of brass in my gravel driveway because a small bucket I had in the bed fell off the truck. It works as gravel and makes folks stop and look and wonder a bit.

My Aunt doesn't like firearms. My Uncle likes them but won't own any due to his wife.

So, a distant cousin and I decorated their christmas tree with rifle casings one year. We didn't tell either one until after their Christmas party. My uncle thought that it was funny. Auntie wasn't amused. Cousin and I howled with laughter.

Mag release buttons(extension) for 1911 style pistol. Use empty deprimed case of same caliber as pistol. Cut case off from head just ahead of extractor groove. Drill & tap mag release for 4-40 screw. Put screw thru primer pocket into mag release.

200 45-70

Cases stored in an empty COFFEE CAN!
Rolled it in a juice bottle with soap and water.

I will never hear the flute in the same note I used to.

I found out that .223 brass would fit perfectly in my blowgun. It worked great for knocking over beer cans when all my darts were lost.

Once I spent about an hour and a half building pyramids and towers out of .45 ACP brass. I spent another half hour digging them out from underneath the stove when the tower collapsed.

I've always thought it would be cool to take a tubing cutter (or maybe a jeweler's saw,) to brass and make rings for maille. I've never enough brass that I was willing to waste, though.

Throw it away! But now I try to give it to someone who can use it or leave it where I know someone will retrieve it. I have seen a .223 case stuck on a cordless phone antenna to improve reception.

9mm cases make good cigarette snuffers. They sell little things for that purpose for like a dollar at the Tobacco Merchant, but the spent cases are basically free and much cooler.

My National Security Policy instructor turned a 12ga shell into a guitar slide, I thought that was pretty cool.

I used a .35Rem casing as a bookbag decoration in high school. I was hoping to freak some people out by keeping it in the outside mesh pocket, but nobody ever said anything.

I've made quite a few tobacco pipes usually based off of .30-06 brass. They work quite well

IIRC Brass is not a desirable material for smoking implements. I believe that when brass is heated hot enough (ie with a lighter) it can produce thread-like particles which affect the lungs much like asbestos. Don't ask me how I know this... I may be wrong on this, but just a heads up. BTW, my first post here on THR, and I like it already!

I've read that that was how Spear got started making bullets. He skooped up old 22 brass and punched them out, into 30 Cal. if I recal correctly. At any rate, Spear did pretty well for himself.

A buddy at work has a necklace made out of .22 brass.

I used a 9mm case to plug a fuel line, otherwise I have really done anything with it other than sweep it into a pile just forward of the firing lane (and depending on who is there, I let them know where to find a pile of once-fired .45 brass).

BTDT. Well, kinda. The brass wound up under my recliner. Although she isnt too smart, the dog could tell I wasnt happy about her knocking it over, so she hid somewhere.

One of the old surplus rounds with the brass hull?

Not original, as both have already been mentioned, but as impromptu earplugs and as BP powder measures. One .44 Mag casefull makes a nice .50 cal. plinking load, as does one .50 AE casefull. Two .44 Mag casefulls is my regular hunting load for round ball, two .50 AE casefulls is my sabot load.

Made a wind chime out of 30mm casings from a GAU-8. Sounded like a bag of beer bottles thrown down the stairs so I took it down.
